Following chronic overcrowding of London's Cemeteries during the early part of the 19th Century, the Government enacted legislation encouraging the establishment of private cemeteries on the outskirts of London. As a result seven large new cemeteries were opened over the following decade. Two of those are on our doorstep - Highgate and Abney Park. Two are south of the river - West Norwood and Nunhead and two are in west London - Kensal Green and Brompton.
I stumbeld across the seveneth quite by accident a couple of week ago. Tower Hamlets cemetery seems quite forgotten. Although it has an active friends group, it's something of a local secret. It seems little visited and quite overgrown - and very nice it is for all that. So, if you fancy a little explore and you're not turmed off by graveyards, here's a wee taster for you.
And by the way the "Magnificent Seven" epithet was coined in in 1981 by the architectural historian Hugh Meller.
