Came across a little grove of seven oak trees on Hampstead Heath, top right-hand corner near the entrance opposite the allotments on Fitzroy Park. According to a plaque in the middle this is "Denzil's Grove", planted in 1975 and named for a man called Denzil Budgett-Keating who was founder of the Highgate Society and apparently a great protector of the Heath.
My first thought was how much they've grown in such a short time as they look quite mature - until I calculated it was actually 40 years ago!
I walked back to my car along Fitzroy Park, and if you've ever envied anyone who is lucky enough to live in the peaceful environs of the Heath, don't - there are no less than three major house building projects going on at the moment, one of which is in its third year. Huge monster properties with basements, swimming pools etc, creating non-stop noise and dust for the residents and visitors alike. Seems Camden Council has no teeth either when it comes to planning applications...
Where are the likes of Denzil Budgett-Keating when we need them?
