hello - i have found a ww2 anderson shelter in my garden. very exited but wondering if its safe to walk over it and also would anyone want it - seems tragic to dig an important piece of ww2 history up. any ideas inf about these would be gratefully received.

It's quite likely you'll find it occupied by an old Air Raid Warden, complete with gas mask and whistle, who wasn't told the war was over. Be gentle with him. Have some Spam ready.

John D that is terrible advice it is far too early to introduce him to junk emails. The man has never seem a digital watch let alone a laptop!
Shame on you

Rubbish, John D. Check first he's a part-time volunteer. If so, OK - just send him on his way smartly.
If he admits he's been full-time paid on a fiver or more a week, shoot him and bury him in the shelter. We can't have him claiming back pay of £4,000+ at 1937 rates on our Council Tax. Cuts man, we might lose our kind Council's gift of our Freedom passes.
Eddie, you plagiarised this from HG Wells. Shame on you.
I thought I was the only one allowed to plagiarise other people's stuff on HoL!

Alan, when I lift stuff from HG it may be plagiarism - if I lift it from Tunbridge it'll be disgusting.
Less than 1% on your bank account and annual inflation at nearly 5%. Fantasy and you have wrongly accused the OAE of plagiarism.

Hi Androulla,
How exciting. It is easy to forget how much of this 'household' archaeology surrounds us - I found the footings for a shelter in the garden when I was living in Finsbury Park and my allotment in Stamford Hill is on a bomb site so we are constantly digging up bits of someone's pantry.
As an ex-archaeologist I'd just say that it is possible that someone out there is recording the incidence of these finds so you might want to drop a line to the Museum of London Archaeology team and the Greater London Archaeology Advisory Service at English Heritage:

They probably won't dig it up for you but they might want to take some photos.
ps tell your husband not to worry about bodies - they would be bare bones by now.
Hi androulla. Sarah here from the Ham&High. Very interested in your air raid shelter and if its on our patch! ?
Would love to find out more- my email is sarah.collings@archant .co.uk phone 0207 433 6223
thanks,
sarah
I had (at least I think I had - it was all mangled) the remnants of an Anderson in my back garden. It took ages to dig it out and I gave up after a while and left the deepest bits in - good luck!
Oakdale Road seems to have a few shelters still in place. My neighbour has a complete one, and I think I can see another a few doors down.
souns like its quite a party round your house, let us know when to come round lol
