We would have loved to go but all tickets were gone when I tried to get them. Why dont they open up more often. I'm sure people wouldn't mind to pay a bit to see such an unusual place.

Veggie: elsewhere on HoL is a copy of the Proposal that the south east wing seek UNESCO World Heritage status. On Tuesday this was discussed at a joint meeting of the Alexandra Palace Consultative and Advisory committees, with about 40 people in attendance.
An officer from English Heritage gave a lengthy talk about world heritage sites in general but without comment (or indeed knowledge) of our site. Despite the generally discouraging tone, the committee voted about 2-to-1 for a recommendation that this go to the Trust Board, the decision-making body.

The problem with opening up AP to the general public is that it has been allowed to deteriorate to the extent that most of the East wing is unsafe. The place needs a lot of capital spent on it before it can generate income.
A film club is a very good idea - there is so much material at AP - wildlife, architecture, sport, lake, concerts and fairground from time to time - that film makers would never be short of a subject.

The potential is of course, enormous. And its been sitting under the local council's noses for 30 years.
With relatively modest investment (less than the council spent on PR & lawyers over the sale) and the imagination that's been lacking so far, instead of just a few hundred visitors per annum, I envisage tens or even hundreds of thousands of visitors annually as a fully developed, world-class UN World Heritage site. This might bring business to our Borough.
The precedent is Grimeton in Sweden. This 1920s radio station is a UN World Heritage site. It's off the beaten track, inland from Varberg in a rural setting.
On Tuesday the CEO told me it attracts between 20,000 to 30,000 visitors per annum. How many more might a TV station in north London manage?

It's unbelieveable the wasted opportunities. Ally Pally has some of the best views across London; perfect spot for a few terraced restaurants to operate from.There's also the Victorian Theatre; fix it and use it!
The new manager is rightly focusing on boosting revenue at the moment using what resources there are; so lots of shows/live music etc. But yes investment is needed in the facilities for the next stage in the Palace's current re-birth.

THIS morning, broadcaster and author Lord Melvyn Bragg became the latest to endorse the UN World Heritage Proposal (1.75 mb PDF) for the south east wing of our charitable trust's Alexandra Palace.
