Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi, I just wondered if anyone else was interested in an allotment. Basically I've been on the landshare website for over a year to see if anyone had a spare bit of garden I could use to grow veg but no ones been in touch so far. However there are quite a few people registered as looking for land in the area. The waiting lists for allotments in the area are either closed due to over subscription or are about 10 years long. I wondered if anyone had tried to get together a group of people together to approach the council?- on the landshare website it says that if there are 6 people or more interested the council has an obligation to try and accommodate and offer some land to use. Apparently there is some council land to the north of the ladder which has been derelict for some years (there was supposed to be a childrens play area built- but that still hasn't happened). What do people think? thanks, le

I'm not sure all the lists are that long so it may still be worth putting your name down - I applied for four of the sites still centrally managed by the allotment officer (not run by the tenants) and got an allotment at Franklin Street (Stamford Hill), last year, after a three year wait. The new allotment officer is issuing lots of dirty plot notices to those who neglect their plots so new ones should be coming up all the time. On a more morbid note, many of the older tenants have multiple plots (from when it was still allowed) so there will inevitably be groups of plots coming up at some point in the future!
Hi, thanks for the advice. The two nearest allotments near me are both closed to applications and the third had a number for the council but they didn't have anyone in who could help but they have logged a query for me. Fingers crossed!
All my correspondence has been with Anne Jones in the recreation department - and she has been really helpful. I think she has now handed responsibility for allotments over to someone else in her team but she is definitely worth speaking to. Her number is 020 8489 1414.
See document (pdf) attached to this post. In that letter you will see mention made regards any planned spend (under new budget restrictions) for allotments over the rest of this financial year within the borough.
Don't be disheartened, put your name on as many lists as you can and one will probably come up within 3 years. Ten year waiting lists are quoted but there is no way of knowing how long it will take. Quite often there are massive waiting lists but the turnover depends on the number of plots on each site and the tenant reliability. So - small bijou site with settled community = closed waiting list, large 200-plot site with transient community or hobby gardeners = small waiting list. Haringey sites have new rules now such as new tenants only being able to hold one plot. Also many new plots are being divided to create more capacity. Keep trying with landshare though!
Thanks for all your replies, I'm on Landshare and will put my name down with as many allotment sites as I can, the council have my details also so fingers crossed. 3 years seems like such a long time to wait but it could be worse, at least I have my window box's!
Hi LE, I'd definitely be interested in an allotment nearby as well. Please let me know how I can help.
Hi, I'm very interested too please
Marian Leatherby
Does anyone know how I can find out who strips of land belong to? There is a small bit of land near me that could be turned into a few allotments but I'd need to know who owns it before finding out if that could be done.
I am told that the way to get an allotment is to hang around a site and find out who the gaffer is, there will be someone who knows everyone and who does what. Be a presence for a while. Make them like you, and they will sic you onto an abandoned patch. So I'm told.
I would be interested in any opps for space to grow veg - especially if locall to the ladder. Happy to help lobby or find out about releasing derelict land if that is possible. Let me know. Where is the land you are talking about?
I'm on the landshare website and someone who lives near to Hornsey station said there is land behind their flats that has been unused for years. The council definitely own it as they have been in touch- they said they where going to put children's swings etc on but that was a few years ago and nothing has been built yet. If anyone else wants to join the Harringay group on Landshare there are 5 people so far- we just need 6 in order to approach the council. I think you just register then click on the Lets Grow tab and look for the Harringay group.
