Hi Hugh,
Nice to hear from you. I was interested in those markings but assumed they were caused by recent revels .... If you like, I can put the thing up tomorrow and examine the lower reaches of the park. These very dry conditions do seem to reveal some interesting relics.

Thanks, Tim. That circular pitch area towards at the east end of the park almost exactly correlates to the loop of the racetrack (once known at the 'frying pan'). I note that a dusty track shown of the far side in the screenshot from your video below follows the exact path of the track where it deviates from the perimeter of the circular pitch area.
If you zoom in on the 1946 RAF photo you added below, you can see the racetack from a similar angle to the photo above.

That's from the Britain from Above series taken on October 10, 1946. Some excellent photos there.

That is a very time consuming site, fascinating photos. I was particularly drawn to a couple of RAF Little Rissington, in Gloucestershire, from 1947 , showing the airfield full of wonderful aircraft, no douby about to be scrapped. I was brought up in the adjacent village of Great Rissington.

That’s a thought, I’ll take a look at Kenley Aerodrome, near to where I spent much of my childhood.
It started life in 1917 preparing Swith Camels for the first world war. In 1930 it was where Douglas Bader began his career and a little later a key base for fighters during the Battle of Britain.
