Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Al Fath - much more than a butcher! (and a campaign for Algerian pastries on Green Lanes)

Here's a quick shout out to Al Fath on Green Lanes, near The Old Ale Emporium, opposite Barclays.

I first went in to try their rotisserie chicken (amazing), then feeling adventurous and in the mood for a bbq their lamb (tender, soft "baby lamb" - perfect for summer and grilling), their fresh chicken (again, fantastic value) and most recently I have been seduced by the pastries which i'm told are only there for Ramadan.

The pastries are incredible - light, chewy in the right parts, with sweet fillings and toppings. My favourite to date is the mille feuille (photo attached) followed closely by the very shareable brioche log (my name, not theirs). I'm not quite sure how to describe the log other than to say - imagine a baguette in brioche form, glazed and with a sprinlking of nuts on top, filled with a chocolate creme patissiere. Totally mouthwateringly, calorifically, worth it.

Anyways - in the interests of keeping the pastries there for longer than Ramadan i'd like to encourage HOL'ers to venture down to Al Fath, make friends with our amazing Algerian butchers, and try their produce. Selfish of me to ask this of you, but you won't regret it.

PS - its not just me who likes their pastries! http://www.qype.co.uk/place/1269468-Al-Fath-London

Thanks for the tip, BB. I'm ashamed to say I've never tried the store. Sounds like another Harringay goodie.

I agree. I had thought until recently this was just another standard Green Lanes butchers/grocers with the same as everyone else, but having finally been into it last month, I can agree that it's far from it. They have some terrific home-made Algerian stews which are really reasonable. I know it's not to everyone's taste but I can heartily recommend the fantastic tripe one with chickpeas.

The guys in there are helpful and friendly and more than happy to explain what's what. The harissa and tinned olives are great. Might even try a teeny, weeny portion of tripe.

Inspired by this post, I've picked up a couple of their marinated chicken legs to cook for my tea. Will report back!

yeah, they were good...

Glad to hear it! I love their lamb - its very tender. Recommend you try that next!

I can also vouch for their Minced Beef. It makes a lovely lasagna! Cheap and no gristly bits!

I just heard that the chocolate brioche logs will be in store today - so if you've not tried them its a good opportunity to go down, and try something different for your Sunday picnic lunch!

Ooh - been past a few times but been a little intimidated to go in as I don't know what half the stuff is *lol* However, it is payday next week so you never know :-)

Just ask them. there really is no need to be intimidated, they are very friendly and happy to help.
