Savannah cats are a cross between a domestic cat and a serval. I'd never heard of them till yesterday. Unbeknown to me, I met a young one at a Harringay neighbour's. At the time I thought it was just a cute young cat with great markings. It was only afterwards that I learned what it was. Whilst the cat's owner assured me that it was completely safe, you can bet your bottom dollar that I'd have been a lot less ready to have it chomping on my hand had I known it was half wild African cat genes.
Very attractive cat, though. So if any of you cat-crazy Harringaeites fancy the latest in cat fashion accessories and you have a sheckle or two to spare (serval sheckles in fact!), then a savannah cat may just be your kind of moggy.

Are the hybrids fertile? Lots of species can be cross-bred (mules, shoats etc) but the offspring are sterile. If you can get F2 F3 etc offspring, then these must be the same species, Felis catus, that has differentiated, like all dogs, rather than two unique species.

Wikipedia has an interesting account of the genetics and fertility (though it could be better written). if I read it right, it seems fertility becomes a problem as the F's increase.

Bengal cats are themselves descended from wildcats (the Bengal leopard cat). I think they are quite dilute but really beautiful. They are incredibly expensive and there is some issue with vaccination so almost everyone who has one keeps it indoors and only ever takes it out on a lead. We came across a beautiful one looking out the window on that little road off Wightman that leads up to Harringay station. The cat was very excited because apparently she loves children (ours were looking in) and the very friendly couple who live their actually invited us in to meet her. She was very well behaved and played with me and the children and I took some nice pictures. Certainly her owners were pleased to have us play with her for a bit because as an indoor cat and because Bengals are so active she needs lots of entertaining.

The Bengal or Savannah cat might look beautiful but it makes an ugly sound. I am very surprised that no one has mentioned this. By sound, I mean its 'meow' is ten times louder than other cats and it is very persistent. The noise it makes regularly disturbs me. Pleeese let me know what will make it QUIETER. I have a disability that includes suffering from 'fatigue'. That cat comes around often when I am resting and its constant noise finally forces me to get up to shoo it away. The only solution I currently have is to get up and throw water towards it. The water never reaches it but it does finally go away for a while then. I consider it a regular and serious nuisance and wish it gone - and I am both a dog and cat lover! To give you an idea, I very much enjoy seeing my neighbours’ two black and white cats and a little local 'tabby', also I was brought up with dogs. By the way I live towards the top of Burgoyne Road (Wightman) so I am in its 'patch'. I have always loved the peace around my flat but things have changed for the worse now because of this cat. I am close to thinking of moving because of it and I have loved this area on the 'ladder' since I moved here 12 years ago. I never thought an animal could upset me this much.

I share your frustration with the Bengal cat. It also makes our and our cats lives a misery at times (mine are the black and white cats). I have posted about the Bengal cat on here a few times out of desperation (as have others) but have yet to find the owner. I wish they could keep it in doors for a few more hours a day to give us and the cats some peace and quiet. It is so loud and so aggressive to my cats.
I have just shooed it out of my garden a few moments ago - it was growling at my cat, about to attack him once again. I too am usually an animal lover - especially cats!
I hope you get some peace, quiet and good rest soon.

It is good to 'meet' you neighbour and I appreciate your kind comments. From all the messages above, I agree with you and am also now betting the noisy one must be the Bengal cat. From henceforth I have named it BB (you'all can decide whether that stands for 'batty Bengal', beautiful Bengal or Bengal beast!?). Anyway, I would be very impressed if its owner would step-up. I would be happy to invite you in for a friendly cup of tea (with biscuit) to see how a solution to BB's behaviour can be found. It is your pet and I am sure you care and love it as animal owners do. (Please excuse my naming it but in the absence of its real name I just could not help myself.)

My understanding is that these are two different breeds of cat. According to Wikipedia, the Savannah is crossed with a Serval, while the Bengal is a cross with an Asian leopard cat.
I'm not aware of a Savannah cat making sounds that could be described as ugly, on the contrary.

absolutely stunning cat, but I would be scared to sleep in case it decided to take up residency on my chest whilst asleep like my moggies do
