Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Recently, several people have asked me about recording meetings with Haringey's leading politicians and their senior staff. In some cases people can't believe the meaningless drivel they come out with; or are incensed by the half-truths, spin, and misleading PR.

Over the years I've occasionally recorded meetings with the cheapest little Olympus voice recorder. But I'm completely out of date when it comes to the latest stuff. I've had some advice that Olympus are still a good choice. But also a recommendation for Zoom recorders. For instance, if people want to to record interviews for a podcast.

Anyone got some suggestions from their own experience?

There's an app for that.

iTunes has a free, easy to use app which is more user friendly than the built in one.

You could use a mobile phone, ipod, ipad or laptop which could mean you don't have to buy an Olympus at all. Any of these devices will record to a reasonable standard.  It would make sense to ensure the device and app record in a format like MP3 which is compressed so it requires less storage space. You may need a USB cable to transfer the data elsewhere like a PC, DVD, CD, SD Card etc.

If you do have occasion to remind someone of what they said - what is the typical response?

* To maintain it was someone else speaking because you cannot see who is talking?

* They indicate they can and do change their minds about what they said ... so it is all different now, they have it under control and can see the light etc

Also, if you use a smart phone for phone calls... there are apps to record those too.

Many thanks for the quick and helpful responses so far. I will certainly be passing this information on to people who maybe didn't realise they already owned the recording equipment in their handbag or pocket!

Pete, what uses to you make of the Zoom H4n?  Is there a vastly increased quality? I realise that lower quality harder-to-hear audio may discourage people from making an effort. And probably vice versa.
