Mirror up mode is basically to try and prevent camera movement/blurring at slow/long shutter speeds. Normally when you fire the shutter the mirror has to physically move up by 45 degrees to allow the light to pass and expose the film, it operates similar to a 35mm SLR camera with quite a mechnical clunk. Obviously when the mirror is up you won't be able to see anything in the viewfinder. Mirror up can be used for creative reasons too, e.g. long exposures at night or painting a night scene with multiple flashes with the shutter open.

The other important tip is to ensure that when loading film that the edges are threaded under both film guides otherwise the film is likely to pop during shooting affecting sharpness across the frame - releasing the film pressure plate while loading will help ensure you do this. In addition, make sure to line up the film loading arrows with the mark on the back otherwise your frame register will be out.
