Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I just thought I'd mention that George Cole, who died today, grew up in the HoL catchment area. His parents ran a florist's shop on Seven Sisters Road, just South of Moreton Road from the 1930s, right until that side of Seven Sisters Road was demolished in 1969. Seven Sisters Road was lined with three storey buildings, all the way from Ward's Corner to Amhurst Park. I only have a shot of the back of their florist's shop. Taken ca. 1962.

George Cole was at school at the same time as my mother and they were on nodding terms, although not in the same class as she was a couple of years older. But I still can recall his mother sweeping the pavement outside their shop, always in a pinny, mornings and evenings. She had a 'Peggy Mount' type of personality and certainly wasn't to be back chatted and wasn't crossed by the kids in the area. I think back then, they were called Battleaxes, but that sounds sexist in 2015. Just very tough women, who'd been through two world wars.

George Cole was also a neighbour of mine in the late 1970s, 1980s at Woodford Green, where all decent Tottenham people went if they went up a bit in the world. :-)

I was sorry to hear of the death of George Cole, a great entertainer.

As Arthur in Minder, he was responsible for delivering the line that caused my father to laugh – possibly the sole occasion (I paraphrase) : –

"I'd love to stop and chat but I've got to go now, I'm expecting a shipment of heavy-duty urinals."

Thanks for that Stephen, all the news items mentioned that he left home @ 15 and was taken under the wing of the actor Alistair Sim, who was his mentor and helped him get rid of his cockney accent.  Ironic really as it was Arthur Daley that was his most successful character.  Minder - what a great TV series, of it's time of course , but still great if you want to see the grimy old London.

I read in an obituary that he was adopted.

Yes, thanks for your comments. I'm going to  have to own up that I've made a mistake.. and actually had someone else in mind. *red face*. I'm sorry, have closed discussion.

Obviously, I've been away from home too long .. :-(

For George Cole read George Sewell..  oops !
