Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Action to Save Wolves Lane Horticultural Centre Moves to Petition

Back in the Spring the concern of HoL members helped to kick off a borough-wide campaign to stop the Wolves Lane Horticultural centre from closing.

A petition has now been mounted to get the issue discussed at full council. You can read more about the issue and can sign the petition via the Wolves Lane website. (Be warned that the petition function on Haringey's new website seems a bit incomplete as yet. You get no confirmation that you've signed, but judging by the petition count immediately after you sign, your signature does register).

Hi Hugh, I've looked at the petition and the earlier post but can't see anything specific about council plans to close it down. Can you provide any further detail on what's currently being considered? I visited recently and it was clear that the centre was being allowed to become very run down, so would like to know more about what's happening. I had a look through council minutes but can only see something that sounded quite positive - a possible idea to use the centre for a veg box scheme along the lines of the Organic Lea project. That was back in March though, so I imagine there must have been further developments since then?

Well done for asking. I hadn't provided any links or refs and should have done. Closure of the centre was one of a series of measures tabled last December as part of a £70M cost savings measure. I'm afraid I don't have any papers to hand but pages 179 and 193 of last December's Cabinet agenda pack should point you in the right direction.

Really helpful, thanks Hugh. H

This would be a terrible blow to those who work and the local residents who shop here. A hidden, well-priced, gem. A little chaotic, though :)  Does it record a profit or a loss? If the council can find enough cash to give a loan to ChickenT0wn, then support for this project is probably chicken feed! Will sign.
