Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
A Shout-out for the Knowledgeable Staff Member at Ally Pally Garden Centre
Like many of us, if I'm feeling lazy, my first reaction when I need to buy something is to reach out to Amazon. But I never do so in the expectation of finding what I want at the cheapest price.
Those expectations on price were more than justified the other day, when I looked online for some garden soil/compost
I rang Ally Pally Garden Centre to check what they had in stock in what their prices were. Not only did I find that they had what I need at a third - yes a third - of Amazon's cheapest price, it came with a largely unbidden but very welcome, expert walk-through of the compost alternatives.
Perhaps it's unfair of me, but I rarely shop these days in the expectation of encountering real expertise in the staff who assist me. Of course, there are exceptions, including some good local ones. I now need to add the garden centre to my list. The lady who helped me on the phone clearly had a deep expertise. She knew exactly what went into each compost, what each was best for and was able to make sensible recommendations for alternatives. All that with a low price - what else could I ask for.
Unfortunately, I didn't get her name - but thank you anyway.

Ama*on is a great resource for research, looking up books, and sometimes for its reviews. Don't ever buy from them though, if you want real retailers to still be there in a few years time. We have the miracle of a real bookshop in Turnpike Lane but that's an against-the-odds fluke.

Do try and buy peat-free compost. Ally Pally aren't, I'm afraid, especially eco- minded, and most of their compost has peat from very important peat bogs, vital for bio-diversity and carbon storage.There are lots of good alternatives about...
