Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

One of the first things I noticed after moving here is that you take your life into your hands every time you cross West Green Road. In only four months I've had that many near misses, and witnessed an accident on a zebra crossing too. The crossings seem to be treated more as a guideline than a rule.

Well it seems the council is doing something about it: this morning I noticed workmen starting to install lights at the zebra crossings. They had a trailer full of lights so hopefully they plan to do this at every crossing.

I'd assumed that works like this would be included in the "Local Implementation Plan (Transport Strategy)".  Otherwise referred to as "The LIP".  Curious, I had a quick look at the LIP on the Council's website - but without spotting the crossing improvements in it.

There are a few other documents on Haringey website about West Green Road Improvements. But again I couldn't see crossing upgrades - apart from works done some time ago on and around West Green Common. (They've given it some new fancy-schmancy name which I can't remember.)

The more recent documents tend to focus on a few shopfront paint jobs - largely at the public expense - to shops towards the eastern end of West Green Road near High Road Tottenham.

If nobody on HoL replies with hard information I suggest you ask the workmen.

Regretfully I think you will find that this is due to utility works with 3-way light control that is due to take place this week...

St Ann’s

National Grid Gas will carry out works to upgrade its network in West Green Road N15 outside 269, next to its junction with Black Boy Lane. These works will start on 14 February 2015 and are scheduled to complete on 22 February 2015 and will involve the use of 3 way temporary traffic signals.

Bah. I saw the temporary ones but also there were green/red man lights on the trailer.

I've noticed this too - it's specifically West Green Road. At the crossing at the top of Harringay Road about one in three doesn't stop. Everywhere else I've lived in London people stop for crossings but here they're in some parallel universe.

Perhaps ask Stuart McNamara to meet you there and see for himself.

The zebra crossing by the Green on West Green Rd is terrible, I have been on it and cars just drive on.  The problem is the bus stop as buses back up onto the zebra crossing leaving a blind spot for drivers as you are only visible half way across the road. It's only a matter of time before someone is hurt and with the school being there too it's frightening.

Yes, that's the one I live by and the most problematic for me - but it's also an issue at the crossings either side of it, even with no buses to obscure the view.

If you like I will raise it with the St Ann's Safer Neighbourhood policing team.  It would be useful if you could let me know whether certain times of day are worse so that the police can target those times.

That would be good, though hopefully they are aware of it, having attended accidents on that stretch of road...

I'm not sure if any time of day is worse, though I notice it after dark (especially when it was darker earlier) on my way home, because that's when I have to cross the road from getting the bus back.

People often raise concerns as you've done, Polly.  Calm, polite and reasonable. Offering their personal observations in the hope that someone in the Council who is responsible for road safety will read what they've posted and go to take a look.

It might work. In my experience being calm and reasonable tends not to work. At least, not until followed up by a formal email or even a complaint. And sometimes even formalised worries and concerns from residents are met with blocking replies from Haringey staff explaining why nothing needs doing or can be done.

This happened in August 2013 when several HoL members complained about drivers ignoring people who tried to use the zebra crossing in Endymion Road (where it goes over the New River)

Eventually, after more emails and some residents' photos, Haringey staff did go and look and finally took some action. (Now, many people can take short videos as well.)

So let's "Get Real"  as St Ann's councillor Peter Morton recently advised a group of residents appalled by the proposed cuts. This is Haringey. The London Borough of Smugness. By all means, start cool.  But be prepared to raise the temperature.

There was a West Green local safety scheme which was consulted on last year, but since raising objections and concerns, every time I ring the Council then tell me they're almost ready to respond to them! West Green Road was identified as one of the top 3 most dangerous roads for traffic accidents in Haringey, so about time they sorted it out!

I will be chasing up, but if anyone else wish to the Chief engineer is John Deasy:
John.Deasy@haringey.gov.uk020 8489 5645
I'm sure you'll start a thread when they finally do respond. Should make for interesting reading!
