Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
A market in Harringay
Hi everyone,
I love markets and I'm a bit disappointed that there aren't a lot of food markets in North London.
Therefore I thought that it's time for our own little market in Harringay! I asked Hugh about it and he's encouraged me to get the market going.
I'm looking for people who make their own honey, bake delicious cakes, cookies and bread, beer brewers, jam makers, sauce- and relish makers, hot food, home made pasta, coffee and chai, home made chocolate, sushi, anything is possible as long as it's home made and of good quality too.
The idea is to do something different from what Green Lanes has to offer right now, food from local producers for the locals. Maybe we could have a few local fruit and veg producers on it too as well as meat, poultry and eggs.
Maybe there are people who grow vegetables and herbs in their garden and would like to sell some of their produce.
I'm thinking of a nice place for everyone to meet their neighbours on Saturdays or Sundays, do some shopping and eat good food too!
If you are interested please send me an email so I can place you on my list.
Details about costs for a table/stall, place and time are tba, but the idea is to keep costs as low as possible.
I was thinking about doing a few trial dates, see how everyone thinks about it and take it from there.

This is a great idea. I had coffee and that evil Moka bread pudding with Jessica this morning and we kicked around this idea. My reaction to Jessica was this this would go down really well. We'd certainly support this.
Am I way off beam or does it appeal? Would Fairland be able to host?
BTW, Jessica just moved onto the Ladder on 5th January, from Surinam via 11 years in Amsterdam. So welcome Jessica and husband.

great idea. the was once areally crappy marked in the main thouroughfare of finsbury park by manor house . It was awful and sold bootleg DVD's and trainers.
I would love to see some good bric a brac and art stalls. why not get in touch with the guy who runs the park road junk shop he may be interested and some of the folks who reside in the warehouses down hermitage and eade.

This is an idea I have been discussing with the Farmers Market traders for quite a while now - the idea of a local producers market. I would certainly like to produce stuff for it.
Question is, where? Thats been the problem, finding a suitable venue. I have one in mind, but the PR needed to make it work and get the footfall will be quite immense.
The Fruit and Veg producers won't work though simply because they can never beat the traders on GL. I do get rather amused by the farmers market when asked to pay above supermarket prices for carrots grown in Barnet when I can get the same for half the price of Sainsbury on GL.
The other question is when can one do it? Most of the local producers are out on other markets on weekends and I can't see a midweek one working.

I don;t think its not going to work, the difficulty is in finding a venue. Thats whats been foxing me for a while.
And you are right, I certainly buy stuff from AP Farmers Market from people who have made it with a passion. Right here in GL (albeit at the PG end), we have a fantastic sauce maker and not far away in Crouch End we have an ice cream producer who is amazing.
Its just where. I think I know where, but its whether we can attract enough people to make it worth their while.

There are a few community market stalls like this around Archway / Tuffnell park. When I get off at Upper Holloway station they have nice stalls selling specialist breads and veg, fruit and cheeses. I think it'd do well if it there was some creativity to it. There is another one outside a pub on Tufnell Park Road more nearer to tufnell park tube station that run on a Saturday. They tend to have very whole-sum sized organic vegetables. When I see these stalls it makes me feel like there is a lot of love in the community to have made the effort to set it up and keep it going - I would welcome something like this around here. I guess it's just finding the right location. How about around where Moka and the other stores, with signposting and permission from the council it could draw people up to Wightman road from Green Lanes and there are lots of people living around that area; just ideas.

Not at all against the food market idea - it sounds great, so not being negative. But you seem quite unfairly negative about our exsisting shops. If you actually take the time chat to the guys in the Green Lanes fruit and veg shops you'll find they DO know where the stuff is coming from - generally farms in Cyprus (I appreciate not great on foodmiles, but not green beans from Kenya either) and actually most of their stuff is pretty seasonal. I remember having a long chat with the bloke in Dostlar last year about the spring garlic that had just come in from his brother's farm.

The park would be good, but only if the stalls could be near the cafe or by the Manor House entrance.

thats where the stalls were before, along the main thoroughfare linking manor house to to finsbury park. I still think you should consider accommodating other stalls though not just food to make it more eclectic.
