The sun is out, muddy paths are drying - this is the time I venture out to the countryside to savour early spring, primroses are flowering and yellow celandines and ice white wood anemones are creeping across the woodland floor.
Spring is my favourite time to walk, and a great early spring walk is Eridge Circular, not too long (6 miles) and not too strenuous (directions attached). Nestled in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a landscape of small patchwork fields, interspersed with ancient woodland and old farmsteads - little changed since medieval times - and there's a great pub at the end. Only an hour train ride from London Bridge (Victoria on Sundays).
This and 25 more walks can be found in Walks for Each Season: 26 great days out in the countryside from London - Julia Smith (all start and end at a train station) available here incl. online and in Harringay from All Good Bookshop (Turnpike Lane), Harringay Local Stores and But First Coffee.

Thanks for this, but the link above doesn't work for me. It works here
Another early spring walk I highly recommend is around Ham Street National Nature Reserve. I was scoping walks for book two yesterday and I've never seen so many wood anemones before, in sections they completely cover the woodland floor into the distance. They are at their peak now, but this week and next weekend would be good times to see them too. The reserve is 5 minutes from Ham Street station (1 hour from St Pancras) and there are three easy to follow walking routes around the reserve. A very special place.
