'Read Me Something You Love' is an online podcasting project where people who love the written word read a short story, an excerpt from a novel, or poem and then engage in a follow-up discussion with the programme's editor. This week Ladder Local, Colin Heinink, shared one of his favourite stories.

On his Twitter profile, Colin describes himself as a  'Primary Teacher, Amateur Actor, Wannabe Singer, Pretentious Writer Bad, Trumpeter and Hospital Radio Shock Jock' etc (yes there is an etc). Many local Tweeters will recognise Colin more readily for his frequent Twitter and Instagram contributions under the name of Albiestar.

This week Colin shared 'Where the Wild Things Are' by Maurice Sendak in the 'Read Me Something You Love' podcast. Before Colin began his reading, podcast editor Steve Wasserman urged Colin to read it as if his audience was school children. So we're treated to a marvellous 'when you're sitting comfortably' performance. This is followed by an interesting discussion which digs deeper into the story and includes in its scope consideration of: text-based monsters versus iPad monsters; playing at punishment; trying on adult behaviours; post-rumpuss sadness; the loneliness of responsibility and the heat of anger/love/dinner.

Colin was invited to be involved in the programme having met Steve at a weekly event called Book Break, at Chelsea Library, where group members read short stories and discuss them in the group.

Colin told Harringay Online: "I chose 'Where the Wild Things Are' because it's a book I love. I enjoyed it as a child, again when studying children's books at uni and then when reading the book to kids in my class. So its been in my life a fair bit. Picture books can be a very powerful and evocative way of expressing the big themes of life"
