Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Over on the Pakistan floods discussion, Al is asking should we organise a collection in Harringay:

"Pakistan International Airline have offered to fly 'life boxes' over to Pakistan for free. It's essentially a box containing water, juice, milk, soap and rehydration tablets which will sustain a small family for 2 to 3 days. http://www.piac.com.pk/Flood_Relief/contents.htm

They prefer a minimum volume weighing 500kgs which needs to be delivered to their depot at Heathrow. I'm in the process of organising a collection in my workplace (in Hackney) and managed to persuade 3 local businesses to transport the boxes on our behalf. Is it worth trying to do something similar in our community?"

I'd be willing to help, i used to work for a disaster relief company that specialised in supllying food parcels etc. in bulk and also small scale deliveries.
Great! Goodonya. How about connecting with Al and seeing what you guys can organise?
This certainly seems to be a very practical approach to getting what's useful to where it would be really useful with a minimum of delay or bureaucracy. Not a bad way to mark the end of Ramadan also.

If Al can add his immediate experience to James's, and anyone else's who'd like to join in, I'd certainly like to contribute. Is there a local base we could work from, as for box packing etc. I'm thinking mid-Mattison Road if we were to approach current tenants of St Augustine's ?

I wonder if the local Mosque are doing anything like this or if they'd like to get involved.
We'd be up for a couple of hours of packing duty or similar - would need to be evening or weekend because of work, but I expect a lot of people will be in the same position.

I would be happy to spent a couple of hours packing - just let me know where and when. I seem to remember that they did something like this at the chestnuts park community centre a while back - can't remember the cause, but a possible venue?

Seems to me the nature of this form of 'life box' giving is for NOW, the most urgent point of an emergency. I suppose it's also a means of bringing the donor somehow 'closer' to the emergency.
There are of course countless more detached and hassle-free forms of donation: a mouse click to the DEC or any of its thirteen constituent aid organisations, for example.

If we're going ahead with the PIA offer, as Al and James suggested, maybe we should be cracking on a bit more expeditiously - given that we'll be starting from scratch and conscious that the best of online intentions sometimes remain online intentions. True, the Pakistan aid appeal (according to DEC) is very much a slow burner with donations increasing by the week rather than tailing off after a big splurge in Weeks 1&2 as with Haiti and most others. Maybe the West's ambivalence about Pakistan, or the image of Zardari managing to fit in a French holiday between his talks with Cameron and Sarkosi, have something to do with the slow start.

Something to aim for might be a pallet load of 100 x 5kg 'life boxes', in line with the dimensions and contents suggested by the website. These would have to be sourced, costed (??? £5 - £6 per box ???), transported to a centre, packed, re-transported to Heathrow at a time agreed with PIA. Are we up for it?

We need to hear from Al for some tips from his workplace experience in Hackney. And schedule a meeting very soon. I'd be happy to channel my Easter/Christmas donation towards this post-Eid effort this year.
I've just heard from a couple of people in this thread and it seems that what's needed (as usual) is someone to organise. Is anyone willing to take a lead on this? (That doesn't mean doing it all yourself!)
I agree, there needs to be someone to head this up - I am very sorry but I can't volunteer, have got too much on as it is. But just reiterating that I am happy to be involved.
