Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

It’s been 274 days since Baldwins the butcher closed, I have tried to find a decent replacement and after a lot of eating I can say that Tony’s at 22 Crouch Hill is the place to go, directly opposite Max’s Sandwich Shop (different post at a later date).

He is a great chap local to the area and a great butcher, have had chops, steak, rolled shoulder of pork, rib of beef, to name but a few.

A great butchers and one of a few we have left in the area. Freemans in Crouch End is also good but Tony’s is a bit closer to where I live.

Tony's shop used to be much closer to us, on West Green Road. He is good, and has been going for a long time.

Freeman’s - seconded.

I tend to also go to the Brazilian butcher on West Green Road who are proper craftsmen - make make their own sausages are full of ideas, advice and generally nice bunch. I often also go to James Elliott on Essex Road when I venture down to Islington.  Baldwin’s is truly a sad loss for all the reasons flagged on this forum. Umut Meat is just a retail outlet of a wholesaler and is pretty soulless.

I was on a similar mission. Baldwins were great for game. I was saddened to see a classic looking butcher and game specialist recently closed in crouch end. Quail and partridge are available in Yasar Halim on green lanes. Not sure where to go for venison or pork in the area. Brazilians have a special pork cut for BBQ, I know that much.

Umut Meat really has been a disappointment, its mostly empty when I walk by.

Have you tried it?

What's wrong with the one that's where Baldwins was?

It's a Muslim butchers so they don't sell pork which means no pork sausages. I think the chipolata sausages for children were Baldwin's cash cow (or should I say cash hog).

We now go all the way to Bethnal Green (sic) Peckover Traditional Butchers 195 Roman Road - they make their own sausages which are as varied and good as Baldwins, have bought venison there , free range pork etc. Train to Liverpool Street and tube to Bethnal Green . They vacuum pack meat in hot weather

I would recommend Turner and George Butchers near Angel Tube station, amazing quality.

I have had a recommendation for Brook Farm sausages in Brook Road N22, predominantly a factory but apparently with a retail outlet. I will be trying them soon.
