The government's penchant for de-regulation has run its course and the full effects of lax regualtion have been seen in everything from alcohol to gambling to banking. Self-regulation has never worked and will never work.
The excesses we have seen in the London Borough of Haringey perhaps culminated earlier this year, when a
Charity wholly controlled by our council, applied to itself, for a permanent premises gambling licence. The gambling licence sub-committee, comprised of our councillors, managed to award the licence to a council-company (Alexandra Palace Trading Ltd).
The Trust Solicitor (indirectly paid by us) even wrote to the Charity Commission
"casino use does fall within the objects of the Charity as a recreational activity”. Since solicitors are creatures of instruction, it seems likely that his letter containing this remarkable statement, was written at the behest of our council, on behalf of all of us.
