THOSE residents concerned about the super-saturation of Green Lanes by betting shops may like to note a new campaign begun recently. In this morning's FT amongst all the coverage of the Bank bail-out, there was an advertisement by the Gaming content company, Prime Table Games, which has launched a national press campaign to abolish the use of Fixed Odd Betting Terminals in UK high street bookmakers. They've launched a petition to Terminate the Terminals..
The government's penchant for de-regulation has run its course and the full effects of lax regualtion have been seen in everything from alcohol to gambling to banking. Self-regulation has never worked and will never work.
The excesses we have seen in the London Borough of Haringey perhaps culminated earlier this year, when a Charity wholly controlled by our council, applied to itself, for a permanent premises gambling licence. The gambling licence sub-committee, comprised of our councillors, managed to award the licence to a council-company (Alexandra Palace Trading Ltd).
The Trust Solicitor (indirectly paid by us) even wrote to the Charity Commission "casino use does fall within the objects of the Charity as a recreational activity”. Since solicitors are creatures of instruction, it seems likely that his letter containing this remarkable statement, was written at the behest of our council, on behalf of all of us.

I'm not a fan of all our lovely new betting shops/arcade but don't think much of the petition's impartiality (they're just trying to get people to gamble using their games and not FOBM)!

This outfit are obviously self-interested and I hold no brief for them.
But fixed odds betting terminals ("FOB-Ts") have been compared to crack cocaine in terms of their addictivity and are possibly the most socially destructive form of gambling.
The profits in gambling are so large and the desire to protect them so great, that existing gambling concerns will often assist objecting local residents who oppose new entrants to the business - who would represent competition and take away custom. The whole business is distasteful and exploitative.
