Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

"Shop your neighbour if you think they're a drug dealer"

This from the Hornsey & Crouch End Journal:

Police are calling on Haringey residents to turn informer if they suspect their neighbours are drug dealers - and promise they will be kept anonymous.

Haringey police are hoping to employ people power to crack down on those who supply drugs and clean up areas plagued by addicts and users.

Cops can still take action against them with crucial information from neighbours, even if they do not want to act as witnesses.

In three-and-a-half-years, 141 crack houses have been closed down by police, with the help of residents and Haringey Council's Anti-Social Behaviour Action Team - from Stroud Green and Muswell Hill to South Tottenham, Wood Green and Bounds Green.

The Police Drugs Focus Unit for Haringey can obtain closure orders from magistrates where there is evidence of Class A being used, made or supplied on a property leading to disorder or serious nuisance.

Head of the team, Detective Sergeant Yasser Awad, said: "My team is dedicated to working to put an end to the disruption and misery caused by the misuse of drugs, and we need information from the community in order to do this. These 141 premises have been closed down with the help of information from local people."

He added: "As a resident you do not have to suffer in silence. Tell us what you know, and you could help to eliminate criminal and anti-social behaviour associated with 'crack houses' and make your street a safer place. We can guarantee your anonymity."

Councillor Nilgun Canver, cabinet member for enforcement and safer communities, said: "Many closure orders have been obtained like this and residents have welcomed the return to normality in their neighbourhood. You do not have to live like that; there is an alternative."

If you have information about drug misuse in your area, please contact police on 020 8808 1212 or speak to your local Safer Neighbourhoods Team directly.
