Hi Angela, I went to North Harringay from 1960 to 1967, infants and juniors. I believe the headmistress, Her title in that era, was Mrs Payne. I can remember Mr. Lloyd Davis, Miss Lindley and not many more teachers. To pick up on the point of punishment, the slipper and the ruler were administered by some teachers, and I don't recall anybody getting the cane at that age. I went on to St Davids school for boys in Priory Rd. and although I was only there for a year, ( we emigrated), I don't remember the cane being "offered" there. An old classmate of mine has, I believe, a bit of a gallery associated with H.O.L. David Rogers. I have seen some class photos published here, but unfortunately I have failed to contact him up to now. Good luck with your quest. I look forward to viewing your results
I was at North Harringay from 1948 to 54 and the cane, chair rod and slipper were in common use. Later I was a reporter on the Hornsey Journal and had the pleasure of seeing a teacher sent to jail for chair rodding a boy across the back of his hand and breaking two fingers as I recall... never say it never did anyone any harm. Its a lie.
Not a North Harringay attendee............but South Grove SM, down St Anns Road, past Woodlands Park, 1960-64.
I was fascinated to learn of withholding/withdrawal of punishment at NH. Both cane and slipper were quite generously shared out by form teachers, in front of class, and head master in privacy of his office.
