Harringay online

Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi all

There's a rear guard action to delete the word ''COMMUNITY'' from this community site. This seems to me rather bizarre since the very essence of this site is to nuture the spirit of our community and encourage a sense of place.

This site does this by connecting people up who may never of had the chance to meet, even though they may only live a few doors or streets away. This community site enables connections with ideas, interests and issues that affect us as individuals and as a group.

Do we really want to be known as simply an 'online' group stuck out there somewhere in cyber space? The name Harringay Online smacks of corporate branding; Tesco online, Sainsbury's online.

Definition of ''COMMUNITY'';
Summary of contemporary uses:

1. Local groupings based on proximity and sometimes face-to-face relationships (as in local community, community work);

2. Community of interests (as in research community, business community); and characteristics (as in ethnic community).

3. Quality of relationships - sharing of common goals, values, identities; participatory decision-making and symbolic production; and connected with these - emotional and moral investments.

Please vote to keep the word ''Community'' within Harringay.

Call me an old romantic if you will .... that's just fine. :)

I agree Matt. I think the issue that was rasied by some people was, whatever the real meaning of the word community might be, it has come to take on a meaning with certain conotations, particularly when used in any local context.

I'm not saying I agree one way or the other (I mean I did name the site in the first place), but I'm trying to represent why I believe some people favour another option.

A "rearguard action" indeed Mr Burge. You've been reading to many old copies of Socialist Worker or is it Environment Action Direct?
Ha ha, Socialist Worker. I might have come across it via my recycled paper toilet rolls! Harringay Online could be a name straight out of 'Management Consultancy Today'. LOL! ;)
Fair cop guv.
Btw folks, I've gone for ''Harringay Community online'', not the other ''Harringay Community'' option. A middle way and very good of Hugh Esq to have included it. :)

Seems like you have whipped up some support there oh multi-coloured one.
Me?! No at all. This is the ''community's'' wish dear comrade. ;)

Btw, dear public, the muilt-coloured goat image was generously provided by our host. A great visual pun for a sunny Saturday February afternoon. :)
........and after having met Matt in the Salisbury for a drink. I think at least that much is a prerequisite to any avatar manipultaion. (Just in case anyone's thinking yours might be next)
This could be a round about way (or indeed conversation) for bringing up the topic mentioned at the Salisbury for a regular monthly meet-up ... off-line like.

Someone did mention the first Tuesday of every month as a possiblity for a drink at the Salisbury ....
Well I prefer Harringay Online rather than Harringay Community Online.

For one, it's punchier, secondly community is in the descriptor of the website and explains straight away what the site is all about, serving the residents of the community.

Why isn’t residents in the title? Well because harringaycommunityandresidents.com doesn’t have a ring to it.

Thirdly, design wise the shorter words are more aesthetic compared to a long list of words

To me community doesn’t harbour any warmth and I think it’s a cold and uninviting word.

Just my opinions though.
And it's also obvious I'd suggest that a website is ... 'online'. ;)
Online is a term is used frequently for such sites. Should we drop the word Harringay, as we all know we live there?

For me the word community points to coffee mornings, drabness an other social negatives.

HCO is just too long IMO, Harringay.com it is then, although I know these domains are taken : )
Hang on a minute. Is this poll not about the name on the site, rather than the web address? Because if it's about the latter or even includes the latter then I believe this poll is null and void! To me and I'm sure others the poll is about changing the name ON the site.

Birdy have you just thrown a spanner in the works? ;)
