Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

July 10th is the 40th anniversary of the major fire which destroyed much of Alexandra Palace. I can clearly remember that afternoon- I was driving back from Barnet and as I turned into Station Road, New Southgate, I could see this huge plume of smoke issuing from the Palace. I drove towards it and got as far as Dukes Avenue before coming to a road-block. I remember it was the lead item on ITV News at Ten that evening. I find it amazing that parts of the building are still not restored after 40 years....!

Less than a month till the 1950th anniversary of destruction of Jerusalem Temple (August 70ce.)  So far they've kept the Western Wall from toppling. Ally Pally restoration has a while to go before we start worrying about the delay.

I was working in Station road, in the building that is now the Green Room (and was then the Council's Housing Action Centre - those were the days) and we saw tens of fire engines tear past and then the smoke coming up from Ally pally, days after the Council took control of it from the GLC.

I sat exams in the old palace - in the great Hall, before the fire and saw Muddy Waters and others play at a festival outside in the grounds.

Muddy Waters eh, when was that Michelle ?   Any other names on that bill ?

Any chance they could restore the original design? Frankly it was much more impressive. Whip-around?

We were driving back from our honeymoon, down Muswell Hill and along Priory Road, so pretty close to the fire. It was so gutting to see it. Plus we had tickets to Muddy Waters that weekend which, of course, was cancelled - doubly gutting.
