Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

A report published by the End Child Poverty group last week revealed that more than one in three of Haringey's children live in poverty.

Child poverty is defined as living 'in families in receipt of out of work benefits or in receipt of in-work tax credits where their reported income is less than 60 per cent of median income' (£26,244 in 2011).

Six of the top seven areas were London boroughs, with Tower Hamlets listed as the area with the highest proportion (52%) of children living in poverty, followed by Islington (43%) and Manchester (40%).

The recent recession has led to a big increase in the numbers of children affected by their parents' joblessness or cuts to wages or hours worked, one that may have a lasting impact.

Poverty is known to have an effect on children's physical and social wellbeing, educational achievement, employment and economic prospects later in life.

Imho, this is a crisis worse than the riots in August. Will there be a community response?

The crappy thing is that this statistic is skewed by Crouch End, Highgate and Muswell Hill being in Haringey. It's actually worse than it looks if you split the borough down the railway line.

24% vs 41%, but that sort of split isn't that uncommon.

17% of all statistics are made up on the spot. That's a fact.
