#100Turkeys (incl. Batman and Santa Claus) - by Canan Marasligil

#100Turkeys - 100 Things You Never Knew About Turkey - daily tweets by the Free Word Centre's translator-in-residence Canan Marasligil.  http://www.freewordonline.com/content/2013/02/100-things-you-never-...

"As part of her residency at Free Word, translator Canan Marasligil is re-introducing the world to Turkey through 100 unexpected facts about the Turkish language, history and culture. You can follow her daily updates on Twitter with the hashtag #100Turkeys, but we'll be publishing each update here in a weekly roundup every Friday."

One - Batman is a city in Turkey.

Two - Women in Turkey won voting rights in 1926 and 18 female MPs joined the Turkish Parliament in 1935.

Three - Santa Claus was born in Turkey! (he was called Saint Nicholas back then). Saint Nicholas of Myra is the primary inspiration for the Christian figure of Sinterklaas. He was a 4th century Greek Christian bishop of Myra in Lycia, a province of the Byzantine Anatolia, now in Turkey. Nicholas was famous for his generous gifts to the poor.

- I've met Canan, she's smart and full of energy and ideas. She'll be organising a programme of Turkey-related events at the Free Word Centre in Farringdon soon.
