The Heights of London underground

A listing copied from the events listings in this morning's Ian Visits. The film is to be shown at the Phoenix Cinema  "A short film about North London’s overground sections of the Northern Line High Barnet Branch and its predecessor the Northern Heights Railway. Originally a steam railway from Edgware to Finsbury Park, with branches to Alexandra Palace, and the town of Barnet, the railway rose to 300 feet above London.

This film uses old maps, railway plans, photographs, and pictures, and photographs to tell the story of how this railway shaped this part of London, the romance of its buildings, bridges, and tunnels. How its construction turned farmed fields into suburban streets.

The screening will be followed by a question and answer session with the film-maker The London Borough Barnet’s Heritage Officer Hugh Petrie"
