Event Description

Following our highly successful "Day of Action" & subsequent press coverage North London Make Votes Matter have their monthly Zoom Meeting.

All are welcome whatever their (respectable) political allegiances.

It is about time our Parliamentary elections were brought into the modern world.

It is in all our interests right across the political spectrum.

Britain is the only European country to use the current system apart from Belarus!

Please join us to learn of the next steps in the campaign.

Do not support this lost cause.

The present voting system in the UK has worked well for a hundred years and created some great governments which have made the UK a very successful civic and economic success.

The only party to support this groups plan for proportional representation, is the Lib Dems, and they were very unpopular at the last election.

The present government has a good working majority and the Conservatives have been repeatedly voted back into office because of their good track record which appears to please most of the people in the UK for most of the time. The Labour Party has had some very good governments too under the present effective voting system.

Unfortunately Neil is mistaken in many of his points.

First past the Post Electoral System has only been exclusively used nationally since just after WW2.  A mixture of systems were used prior to that, an example of which might be the two University Seats (Oxbridge) one of which was held by the writer A.P. Herbert.

Many parties support P.R. Eighty five Labour CLPs have passed motions in favour. The Conservative Action for Electoral Reform support us and often speak at our events at which Conservative MPs are represented.  There are 152 MPs in all in favour so far.

All the smaller parties including the Brexit party support (I don't know about Lawrence Fox). Others are Greens, Women's Equality Party, The Nationalist Parties, as he mentioned the Lib/Dems. (since 1922).

Even Winston Churchill supported it (in a speech in 1933). it goes that far back & that widely.

Today most Labour Members & Voters support it as do a surprising amount of Conservative voters.

It could be argued that this Government & its majority was elected on the Brexit promise.

Even then an element is the performance of their opponents.

Leaving aside the Pandemic the current situation could hardly be said to be stable, even the Parliamentary majority gets wonky as time goes on.

This matters to us all. Even under the now outdated Two-Party System the actual leadership & policies of both parties can be a hostage to elements within them.  This has been seen in both of them over the last two or three years.

It is just a case of modernising the system really.
