Event Description

Join us next Wednesday 2nd of November, to celebrate with the community “Dia de Muertos”, day of the dead. celebration, 3 pm onwards. There will be live music !!
Free entry.
The cacti house will host an altar dedicated to local wildlife, plants and animals, feel free to bring a pic of a pet that is not longer with us.
Yummy vegan food by Elki @nopalerasessions from 5 pm

Local artist Emily Wood Ramirez Ahmed, @emilywoodartist will be creating a Dia De Los Muertos ofrenda/altar, and invites you to bring a photo of a departed loved one or a note to place on the alter in remembrance.

Emily will also be running a ‘family friendly’ arts workshop (drop in 5-6pm) to raise awareness about Dia De Los Muertos, it’s meaning (not a Mexican halloween!)and to learn how to make Monarch butterflies from wire and paper.

The Day of the Dead occurs at the same time of year as the annual Monarch butterfly migration to Mexico. Many indigenous beliefs view the butterflies as representing the soul of ancestors returning to the earth. Workshop participants will create a Monarch butterfly whilst discussing and learning about the Monarch butterfly and the Day of the Dead, we encourage participants to name their butterfly in honour of someone they want to remember.

The butterflies can be kept by participants or can be donated to the project where they will join many other butterflies in a community art exhibition and projection at the University of Southampton at the Arts and humanities festival on the 19th November. A collaboration with other Mexican diaspora artists and Dr Jane Lavery at the Latin American Studies Department at Southhampton University.
