Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I've just had some correspondence from National Grid setting out plans to redevelop the area of the Haringey Heartlands.  Whilst this area is just outside of Harringay, in Noel Park, I just wanted to see what people thought of the plan to dismantle and clear the gas holders.

There have been a couple of attempts to get them English Heritage status which have unfortunately been unsuccessful.

The gasholder, known as Hornsey no.1, was erected in 1892 and has been described by the Victorian Society as “a key part of London’s industrial heritage”.

Heloise Brown, conservation adviser for the Victorian Society, said: “This is not just any old gasholder. Hornsey no.1 will soon be the last surviving example of a highly innovative design and it must not be lost.

I personally would be very sad to see them go - wondered what others thought?

.....and here's another way this valuable asset could be made use of and another here. (Both gleaned from one of a series of posts about this issue over the past three or four years).

The problem with most of these ideas for turing it into something "useful" is that one of the beautiful elements of this type of arcitecture is its silhouette in the skyline as  light passes through the empty space. Imagine if someone filled in the Eiffel Tower so that all that was left was the exteriour shape. How ugly would that look?

The space ain't gonna be left unused, Rachella. So, it's a kind of use or lose it. (Or in this case lose it or lose it).

Dear All

I'm not up to date on what the plans are for the gasometers in Wood Green. However, I have seen the converted gasometers in Vienna which were turned into housing.  They were amazing.

Wikipedia has an article about them. See link below.

I'm not saying to leave it unused. We all know it's a moot point.

Karen,

I feel very strongly that the Hornsey Gasholder/Gasometer No.1 should not be demolished and some way should be found to use the structure as part of the (oddly delayed) Heartlands Development.

I attended several residents meetings during 2011 (to formulate views about the development) with the main purpose to raise the issue of the Gasometer.

Many residents who attended felt the same but the response from Marc Dorfman (now gone) was very unhelpful.

Unless our council insist on it being part of the development there is no way a developer will bother to incorporate it - a bit like our baths frontage in High Street Hornsey.

I am not sure what locals can now do about this with the lack of interest by the bodies who are supposed to protect our built environment seemingly uninterested (again the same as English Heritage with our baths).

I have had the gasometers in my view all my life (60 years) and can see it from my road in north Hornsey every day.

Having said that, with the monstrous blocks planned for Heartlands I don’t suppose we will have a view of anything other than the sides of the flats and the metal rail sheds at Coronation Sidings which the council also supported.

We could have something remarkable like the gas holder in Dublin. What we will get is blocks of generic flats. It's a real shame that the council are allowing this to happen.

That didn't work on my last post, but we could have something like this!

For the avoidance of doubt, heres' a picture I snapped on my way through Ally Pally today. I think No1 is the one on the right.

Very sad to hear of the plans to demolish these beautiful structures, absolutely crucial part of the fading Wood Green skyline. How can these plans be allowed to go ahead? No pride left in local architectural & industrial heritage? There is also wildlife here!

According this Gasholder Number 2 was pulled down in the 1970s.... http://www.haringey-heartlands.com/site-history.html
