Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Harringay aggro - violent incidents in the last 48 hours (March 2009)

It may just be coincidence but:

- Saturday night, someone shot on Cavendish

- Saturday night (10'ish) we see 4 youths walking up Effingham, 2 of them carrying baseball bats (and clearly not off to play baseball)

- Monday night (tonight), police taking photos on Effingham. When asked, they said there was a fight (if anyone knows any more, please let me know)

I think it's a combination of factors - territory, sexual and racial tensions.

Very recently I saw 2 (white) girls follow 2 (black) boys on bikes along Falkland Road. The usual teenage banter ensued but the girls were really making a play for the boys (ie, grabbed their faces and gave them a good snog!)

There are also a couple of men in their 20s who regularly walk their scary-looking (but well behaved) dog up Falkand Road a couple of times each day. They go up to the open space but are always back within minutes, so the dog doesn't get an awful lot of exercise iyswim (but of course they could be entirely innocent and unrelated)

I didn't like having to speak to and reassure my children who heard some of went on last night. I think it's time more community groups get involved. North and South Harringay Schools for one. Surely some of these youths are ex pupils?
I don't understand the point you are trying to make here, Angela.
What's the problem with teenagers kissing? And what the hell has their skin colour got to do with it?
And are you worried about the welfare of the dog? A couple of short walks a day seems adequate.
Blimey angela i'm sure you didn't mean all that ?
Danzigger, read my post again. I said in response to the other posts that I think it's a territorial, sexual and racial elements that are fuelling the fighting.

I am reporting (obviously badly in your opinion and you are probably right) what I see as potential factors in the current situation

I don't think drugs is a factor.

Matt and I saw and heard what happened last night, practically on our own doorstep

James Walsh, what do you mean?

If this website wouldn't keep crashing I could post in more detail DZ
With respect you are not making any sense
I agree, I don't understand :/ Were the girls who went after the guys encroaching on relationships that were already there and raising issues?

And what is implied about the dogs- do you think the owners were dropping off/ picking up/ doing something else dodgy?
I don't know but I came on here to see if anyone else did! I live up by the sal and in the past few weeks I've seen police outside my house at least 3 times

-first time for a fight I heard breaking out outside my window - I heard someone shouting 'F*** off, F***off!' and by the time i looked outside there was something happening in a group. went down to tescos about 20 mins later and the security dude was controlling who went in and out of the shop. We went somewhere else to buy our snacks and when we came back there was a guy chatting to police talking about how people had started on him and then he had been *stabbed in the hand*

Then, there was the stabbing that spilled out from the bus around the Abbey/Zams

Then tonight at about 9pm there were about 6 police outside lion king taking statements.

Add to that one of the side roads nr sainsburys being cordoned off the other day (is that the shooting thing?) and it looks a bit dodgy.

It's all a bit wierd really- I've always felt quite safe round here, why suddenly is there an explosion of utter mentalness?
Full moon! (owwwww!) Shootings in Germany, Ulster, America. All that kind of nut, nut explosive violence goes with it.
Folk here are obviously confused and concerned as to why this violence has suddenly erupted on our streets. From all the citizen reports posted on here it looks very likely that knives are being used during these youth encounters.

Therefore everyone is entitled to come on this site and throw up ideas as to what they think maybe driving this violence between these groups of youths.

Falkland Rd happens to be quite a busy route for said youth wandering backwards and forwards between the area around Mountview Court and Fairland Park, which is at the top of Falkland Rd. One can even hear their excited chatter as they walk up & down the road.

Only last night I heard one boy and girl (on bike) talking excitedly about the goings on between various youths in these latest spats of violence. The boy is a well known trouble maker but he is young and impressionable. That's where these dog walkers come in (with their pit bulls). They are in their late teens and have considerable influence over these younger kids, hanging around in the park, trying (as Adam said here) is get their dogs to fight and so on. These younger and older individuals hang around together a lot, boys & girls. Some of the younger children do go to schools around here (when they bother to attend) and some of them are known to social services. Lets hope the various services (police, Children's services etc) are connected up with the issues and individuals involved with these current spats of violence.

The youths that are fighting at the moment probably aren't squaring up to each other about drugs. It maybe something as basic as egos and showing off, trying to act tough. However the older members of these so-called gangs probably are selling drugs and maybe using these younger kids to sell it and lately they may have decided to use these kids to aggravate over territory.

It's all speculation of course and one would hope the police know these kids and have an idea what is going on and who is influencing them. SNTs were set up to gather local intelligence on individuals/groups thought to be of concern and deal with any problems that might flare up so they don't get out of control. They will surely know something of what is going on and will report to Police Ward panel next week.

In the meantime please respect the thoughts and opinions of others who come onto this forum to chat about what they feel may be going on. Members of HoL who aren't regular contributors should be encouraged to contribute.
Right, I shall re-phrase my badly worded post from last night.

The fight that occurred on Tuesday night involved girls as well as boys - including one of the boys I have seen being followed by the 2 girls I referred to.

These boys have been intimidating adults and other teenagers for some time.

As for the dog, of course I'm not worried about its welfare. The dog seems to have 2 owners and they take turns to walk up and down Falkland Road during the day, often accompanied by a different person each time.

The dog is not on a lead, and although well behaved, it is scary looking which makes me think it is being used for protection or intimidation purposes.
That makes more sense! I didn't see the connection before. Thanks for the update
Just another reminder that concerned people can speak directly to the police tonight about these matters at the LCSP meeting beginning at 7 in the church hall in Cavendish Road
