Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Right. Soapbox time. I am doing a straw poll. I know it it not very scientific as the folks on HoL are possibly not likely to have a phone at home, or even a mobile, but a question.

Has anyone ever used one of the phone boxes on Green Lanes? You, or anyone you know.

Just to remind you there are 7 between the Bridge and the Salisbury...

I think there are circumstances you could argue that if someone lost their phone - they could use it. The problem is these days because we use our phones as our phone books we wouldn't know the number of anyone to call without having the phone with us. Only numbers I know without checking my phone is my mum and my sisters landlines not their mobiles

I noticed in this week's list of planning applications that there were a number of submissions for removal of phoneboxes. So it looks like they won't be there much longer.

That I have not yet seen. Someone actually sent them to me so I should check them...

Just as an aside. If you are not a BT provider, and you are not under a statutory obligation to provide a phone box (there are regulations that state we must have so many per x metres) I guess you can only have a phone box if you have permissions.  What are these? Licences? Contacts etc? Anyone got any ideas?

Telecommunications stuff (that includes the cabinets for broadband you see all over) are permitted development. The owner simply has to notify the planning authority of their intention to put one up and if the authority doesn't object the consent it deemed to have been given. If you haven't seen it, there's an Ofcom guide to removal of redundant boxes

Yes these weren't planning applications as such, they were just notifications.

which ones though? on green lanes?

I can't remember the last time I used a phone box, I've never used any on Green Lanes. Like someone else said the only number I can remember is my own mobile and my home land line.

Nope.Never.

I was told by someone in media that the phone companies make their money on these because they can sell ad space on them.

I was only thinking yesterday while looking at the god awful state of the street that The 'regeneration' project a few years ago completely failed to de-clutter Green Lanes. A real shame.

All the Council does is produce airy-fairy artists' impressions then comes up against reality.

" Oh shit !!! there are pipes and cables under the pavement !! Who knew ? "

I see them getting plenty of use...unfortunately for many things other then making phone calls... toilet use, drug deals, night shelter and changing room.

I hope they are all removed and replaced with trees!

The crack dealers who have moved in on Grand Parade use them quite a lot. Especially the ones outside Papa John's and McDonalds.
