Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi

I'm having my staircase repaired as many of the spindles are broken. I have searched everywhere locally and online for pine spindles 27mm x 27mm x 900mm but cant find any that size. They are all 32mm x 32mm or thicker.

I'm just wondering if anyone knows where I can look for new or reclaimed ones? I can have them made but the price is £25 each rather than £3 each ready made.

Thanks

Susan

When I had my loft done ( I went wth a independent builder) I wanted the new spindles to match the existing old ones. I searched high and low for them but with difficulty couldn't find someone to do them because of the turns in the wood. Then suddenly someone recommended a workshop in Walthamstow. Three years ago they were 19/20 pounds each. If you would like their contact I can look for there card.

Hi Anthony

Thanks for your reply.

I'm on a budget really. Ready made ones are £3 each and I need 10= £30. The timber merchant in Crouch End has them for £21 plus vat so its going to cost  £252 plus labour if I get them made. Its a big difference.

If I cant find the right size I may have to resort to having them made.

Yes I agree they are expensive and I really had to convince the other half they were worth the investment. We got the estate agent out to value the house after the work was done apart from the obvious of the loft extension they commented on the spindles of all things "shows a sympathetic continuaty" of the old and new part of the house. Yes they look nice but in someways I now feel they are an investment too. Just my thoughts. Oh this workshop in Walthamstow carries stock of different spindles too. I think they might overrun jobs and keep a few in stock or keep popular styles - you might find a close match. I am not too sure of the cost of these ones though.

Anthony.

Thanks for that Ill look up the Walthamstow place and see what they have.

Wouldn't it be cheaper simply to replace them all with the £3 version....?

Hi Antoinette

In one way it would be cheaper but there are 50 spindles and the base and the banister have cut out spaces 27 x27 so tall the spaces would have to be made bigger

If it's a period house with the original spindles, that would tly lower the value of the property.

Only if you are selling it... and do you think it's enough to affect the price enough not to do it in a modest way?

Talk to one of the builders who are doing lofts or better still get the number of the folks doing their stairs. When I had my loft done they took some old ones out. They made new ones to match and I ended up with several spares, many of which I gave away on HoL

Hi Justine

Thanks that's worth a try

Susan

Hi, I got some from a place in St Albans,  they were very helpful, I showed them a photo and them matched them... http://www.jandjstairparts.com/

Match them with something off the shelf too, which does indeed reduce the cost!

Thanks for that Rob I have checked with them but they are too thick. The problem is that the dimensions I need at 27mm x 27mm and no one seems to stock them
