Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

A letter just dropped through y door asking for feedback. Here is mine:

"I hope the council considers the permanent closure of Wightman Road. Gradually commuters and long-distance drivers are realising they need to either use alternative main roads, or switch to public transport or cycling. The study shows that residents overwhelmingly do not own a car (61%), and prefer public transport, walking or cycling for their commute (82%)."

No ideally about it. The Traffic Management Order expires on 1st September. Wightman Road has to reopen when the bridge is finishes and the TMO has expired whether you like it or not.

Peter. You're not listening. 3,000 adults plus 1,000 children. 20 roads up the Ladder whose lives are blighted. But will no-one think of Antionette?

Look the sarcasm and childish remarks from you guys needs to stop! We understand your passionate but implying anyone's journey or reason for commuting, need to use a vehicle etc is unimportant is just plain ignorant. If you have no real argument or have nothing constructive to say then please can you refrain from belittling others. I had a few of you jump on my back although a large part of me backs the reason behind the campaign just not the actual end result you are aiming for. Yes to a lot of you out journeys are unimportant but our jobs need to be done, some of you are landlords and for example if Wightman road stayed closed I can only get to 50% off. The inspections I could versus being open, I would then need to raise my fees which would directly impact the pockets of the local landlords. Would I be right to do so? And would you be happy to pay more for your products and services as a direct result of this? What I'm trying to say is we hear you and the 4,000 plus adults and children of the ladders, but there are 100s of 1000s of lives and businesses that will be effected in the wider area by such a closure. Let's stop being selfish and be considerate of all, and before I'm bashed for not supporting again let's be clear I would love to see the day traffic went no further than Manor House and didn't reaper until palmers green, green lanes tree lined and cobbled with a super eco friendly modern tram of some sort cycle paths and vast open spaces for cycling walking outdoor cafes etc but the realistic side of me knows the country and city are decades off from this. Mini steps towards this I agree should be taken but not the full closure of Wightman Road.
I would rather your lives are blighted than mine seems to be the main sentiment from supporters of living Wightman and if you disagree, then you must be selfish, anticycling, car-loving haters. And blighted is a ridiculous, hyperbolic phrase. Your first world problem is such a burden. if your lives are blighted, just imagine the turmoil, devastation, havoc and wreckage wrought upon your neighbours, especially those who live on Green Lanes, but of course your quality of life is more important.
I imagine all the ladder rung roads are very safe. I live on Effingham and noticed no change in traffic, because I'm one of the many that cars generally avoid. Open up Wightman, it's selfish for the rest to keep it closed. Then revisit its closure once the rest of the borough traffic is sorted
The rest of the borough is sorted. Every residential area has traffic flow control except the Ladder. We have campaigned on this issue for decades. It is precisely the current configuration that is giving so many so much hope. Withe by-election too now really is the chance to seize the time.
But you are right we also need measures like a red route on Green Lanes and the new housing developments to be car-free.

Agreed Jessica  completely un-neccessary to to close the entire length of Wightman Road for so long, it  must be re-opened when we were all told it would be.   

You all make a great argument for keeping Wightman road closed, but to the same token you feel opening up filter roads in the garden and others would divide our community and hack people off, is not burdening the entire north London with gridlock, so that a few of you can have a private cycle route to Finsbury Park and back the same? Wightman Road has always been a major artery in north London and without it whilst traffic has calmed it still quicker for me to drive to my clients in fonthill road from home in Southgate than from my office on Wightman road. I've lived in Haringey since I was 1 and spent some 30 years there before moving to Southgate and still own my business there. And no where on the ladders did the children have the roads not since the mid 80's anyway, and whilst there is more traffic, have the numbers raised that significantly in the last 5 years because the complaints I'm hearing a long term member of the community only started coming around 2 years ago, and it seemed mostly from new residents moving to the area more recently having paid some 500k plus to live there. I understand your gripe I do, that's why I moved to Southgate, you chose Harringay with its traffic and moved there now live with it. This is just like the yuppies that moved to Notting hill because of the carnival and the life it brims to the area and then started to boycot and petition against the carnival and try to have it scrapped!
It isn't just just new residents want things to change Esat. I've lived here for 32 years and I do.

I'm also a long term resident Esat of 22 years and want change. Many of my neighbours and local residents are the same. I've raised my family here, seen the traffic worsen and realised my area was neglected and blighted by traffic and pollution but thought that nothing could change. I now believe it can and must. The Haringay Ladder has been abused as a commuters traffic dump for too long and its residents deserve the same rights to Healthy living as residents in other areas of the borough like Southgate. Everything needs a review and overhaul which is why Haringey Council agreed the Green Lanes Transport Study. No one has said Wightman Road should be a "private" route for cyclists only, but they need to be able to share a much safer Wightman Road. Traffic needs to be reduced, HGVs need to go. Did you know that Wightman Road is exactly the same width as the rung roads? That is why cars are on pavements - pedestrian safety and access has been sacrificed to through traffic. Pedestrians/parents pushing buggies with young children, wheelchairs and mobility scooters need proper width pavements they can walk/go along, this is their right. Children need unpolluted air, Asthma rates are high in local schools. Recent research correlates pollution with child mental health. Though it may be difficult, things have to change.

Another long term resident - moved here in the early '90s - and in favour of traffic reduction measures on the Ladder.

Esat, you might consider how your argument applies to yourself - you have an office in Wightman, clients in Fonthill, yet chose to live in Southgate; now live with it.

I do live with it and love it too! I now live in a quiet cul-de-sac where kids could play out, I have a lovely traffic free cycle route to the park and we don't have heavy traffic or HGVS to complain about, hence why I chose the area. My problem with working from Harringay is not affected by where I live, you either misunderstood or chose not to understand my problem is working from within Harringay once I am there, if you actually paid attention you would have noticed my gripe was that since the closure I can go from Southgate to Finsbury Park quicker than Harringay to Finsbury Park, now that is shocking, but I'm sure you wouldn't want to acknowledge the knock on effects of the closure as it doesn't bode well with your argument. And as for the residents 2 of some 10,000 on the ladders isn't convincing and even if it we here a majority, you asking a question as if there is an option and so you are getting a preference, not a considered response that takes into account where this traffic will go the effects it had on our area, local businesses and the north London area and traffic in general. I would love there to be no traffic, for cars to be on roads outside of the city and to teleport directly into my garage, but is it feasible about as feasible as your arguments or plans. I doubt anyone for this closure actually uses the route or drives.
