Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Phone snatched on Green Lanes this morning - be careful

Hi all,

I saw a lady have her phone snatched from her hand as she walked along Green Lanes this morning.

It happened just before the bus stop at The Finsbury pub.  3 kids on what looked like a stolen moped (no plates and damaged at the front) mounted the pavement about 10 yards behind her before riding alongside and snatching her phone and speeding off towards Manor House.

The lady was very shaken but unhurt thankfully.  The police were there in 10 mins and took statements from me and another witness - so hopefully they'll get them.

i think that must have been the same guys i saw a few months ago. while waiting at the bust stop at manor house going towards homebase, guys on a scooter pulled up and snatched the phone from the girl next to me.

they used to do this in bermondsey. here they waited outside the station on bikes. when ppl come out from the tube usually you take out your phone and check for messages etc....they used that to target you and would follow you on their bikes waiting for the right moment to pull up next to you and snatch the phone.

police calls it a low impact crime as no one gets hurt. for a good phone they can get £250 easily. so very profitable for them with little risk.

so advice is: wait till you are a few meters from the station before checking your phone. hold it tightly and close to your body. and just be aware of your surroundings.

These guys were actually riding up and down Green Lanes looking for a victim, I believe - rather than just focussing on the Tube station itself.

I was on the park side of Green Lanes just past the New River, when the moped did a u-turn in front of me, crossed the road and then mounted the pavement on the other side of the road to steal the phone.   Then, to make matters worse they taunted the lady (and gave her 'the finger') before riding off.  Horrible.

If, as it sounds, they are repeat offenders - it will hopefully be a matter of time before they get caught and the police can link these incidents together.   It just makes me so mad that some people think it's OK to steal other people's property.

Not much happen to them when they get caught. I caught a pick pocket red handed the police knew him like an old friend. Two police teams were present, over 12 officers. They all forgot to take the registration of the bus, so the offender couldn't be charged because no CCTV footage could be traced. Even if the nicked him they said he would be back, they knew because they said they nick him ' all the time'.

It's why the prolific offenders keep doing it., because they can. They need to be GPS tagged for a long time and none of the expensive cat a mouse game that gets nowhere.

I saw police talking to some guys with mopeds on one of the side roads off St Anne's Road at around 17.40 - connected?

Where is Mr Walsh and his call for vigilantes ?

I leave my phone on its ledge in the hallway, as I've done for more than thirty years. So far no stolen mopeds have made it up to our front door. Admittedly the front gate and eleven outside steps are useful deterrents which I recommend. This has the additional advantage of leaving me free of technological gadgetry as I stroll along Green Lanes or Wightman Road. Please do try it, everybody.

Ah yes, Alan, the Tradtelefon. Why haven't BT included that in my "package"?  I think I may invent my own.

Large-gauge elastic bands are available from Staples at Tottenham Retail Park.....
