Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Don't Forget - Wightman Road Closed for 5 months from Next Tuesday (29th March)
In case it's escaped your notice or slipped your mind, Wightman Road will be closed to through traffic for five months starting next Tuesday 29th March.
This will be a significant dislocation to North London traffic movement. So much so that warning notices have been placed as far away as Archway. No doubt it will also have a significant impact on Harringay's traffic.
However, there really is no alternative to at least partial road closure. The railway bridge between Alroy and Wightman roads is being replaced and there will simply be no road for a few months!
One option the Council could have taken would have been to simply reroute the traffic via the Ladder rung roads. It is to their credit, however, they recognised that with over 16,000 vehicles a day using Wightman Road, this would have placed an intolerable burden on our narrow residential roads, already beset by undue traffic volumes.
After consultation with residents, the solution decided upon is to place blocks at regular intervals along Wightman Road, in effect creating clusters of two or three rung roads. Whilst this will retain unfettered access for residents. it will render the whole Ladder, including Wightman, useless as a rat run. Quite what it will mean for traffic in Harringay, Haringey and further afield remains to be seen. Those of us who have been working with the Council on this very much hope that traffic will quickly find other routes. It's fair to say, however, that at very best, we're going to experience some very heavy congestion on Green Lanes for a month or so.
At the same time, the Harringay traffic study will continue. The coincident timing of this piece of work with the bridge closure may be fortunate in that it will give the consultants an opportunity to study the outcome of diverting traffic away from Harringay.

Thanks Penny. For those who read HoL regularly this was posted here last year. For those interested, there are a few threads about the Harringay Traffic Study here. (Penny you really mustn't encourage them with their "Green Lanes Area" nonsense. :o) I still can't work out quite why the Council seems so determined to use any other epithet for Harringay than Harringay!)

They seem to allow Harringay Ladder sometimes, but never Harringay.

I found 2.3 very interesting....
2.3 A north-south Cycle Quietway route from Farringdon to Bowes Park is proposed traversing three boroughs. The section of the route through Haringey starts from Palmerstone Road in the north to Finsbury Park in the south. A route alignment through Wightman Road is more favoured to the planned route via Uplands Road provided there is filtered permeability. The consultant will be required to assess the impacts of closing Wightman Road to traffic except for access.

My son had a play date close to his school today so I took the chance to do a test run of our new school run route.
It took us just under an hour to get from the junction at the bottom of Muswell Hill to the right hand turn from Turnpike Lane into Green Lanes. Good news is that the south bound part of GL is flowing much easier than normal - at least until the St Annes Rd junction.
I know I won't be coming back from school every night at 6pm but I thought it might give me an idea of when traffic is back to more normal levels after the Easter holiday.

Has anyone seen the promised changes to the road blocks on Wightman Road to sort out the numpties driving through the middle and up to the pavements?

There were a couple of guys this morning looking at some of the cement blocks and tutting while putting back the road closed signs, so maybe. I guess if they put them about a foot or two closer to each other they should be close enough, but then they might need to stop people just mounting the curb to get past them.

Good grief... if they needed someone to look and tut I could have done that... I have years of practice... This morning there was a police van at the junction of Burgoyne sending a white van man on his way.... I thought Hugh had said they had resolved to actually remedy the problem by the close of play yesterday

I can certainly confirm watching two cards go through the middle of the blocks while unlocking my door, this is not the case :)
