Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Steam train?

A train just went past on the Barking to Gospel Oak line behind my house that sounded like an old steam train going 'chuffa-chuffa'. I ran to the window too late to see what it was, but I can still just hear it in the distance.

Any ideas?

Probably the Cathedrals Express, the engine may have been The Mayflower.

Here it is emerging from under Oakfield Road where the Barking to Gospel Oak line links to the East Coast Mainline and then about to pass under the Parkland Walk.

Ah - sorry I missed it, but even the sound was lovely. Reminds me of travelling in India thirty years ago when all the locomotives were steam. Young men used to stroll along next to the slowly departing train and just hop on at the last minute before it gathered speed.

Quite!

Some coal from Kellingley which shut yesterday was good fuel for steam locos (the classic Welsh steam coal finished way back).

The answer is Russia, and has mostly been for some time. Poland too I think. So not only does Putin mediate gas supplies to western Europe, he could have the future of our steam railways in his hands. If they're seen as a strategic military resource (which is what the Swedes did during the Cold War, by keeping a steam loco reserve) watch out.
