Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Just wondered if anyone had any thoughts on secondary schools in the area? Am applying at the end of the month for my daughter. Grieg City, Heartlands and Hornsey School for Girls are the realistic options. I've looked at them all but would appreciate the thoughts of anyone whose children attend those schools. Thanks!

You are of course correct, it is not the be all and end all, but it certainly is a consideration and one that you should not have to dig so hard to find... It should be readily available, after all, how can anyone make a fully informed decision without it?

Your right, both my kids are at park view. The eldest has just started GCSEs and We have no complaints. They both put park view as first choice and both have done really well so far. Great communication from the school, the teachers always willing to help/answer any queries.
I'm very happy with the choice we made.

This (the delay in getting GCSE results published) isn't something new this year - last year it was the result of a group of head teachers in the borough deciding they didn't want schools assessed on results alone and sitting on the said results until they had to be made public. Then the concern was to do with changes in the rules on resits, as I understand it. There was a post about this here last year:

Replying to Jude's specific point - the new resit rule came into affect in 2014 as I understand it and so I don't think can explain changes since 2014.

Justin - I meant you in general not you specifically!  Back from Hornsey open morning and the reason they haven't published their results is that they have outstanding challenges/remarks on the results. 

After some serious data crunching on the Dept of Education website - it seems like Hornsey School for Girls really is an excellent school - (it comes out top in the country when you compare to other schools of a similar type (I assume this means intake)) It does well for all levels of its intake.

The head seems really down to earth and speaks in a really enthusiastic and positive way about the school and the girls.  The tour lead by a lovely Year 10 was comprehensive and meant we dropped in on random classes. All the teachers were happy to stop and let us know what they were up to and there was a general feeling of 'good' learning across the whole school.  

So I find myself in the very lucky position of having to choose between a bunch of really good schools - with strong senior management teams and vision for their (our) children.

This is despite local councils having steadily shrinking direct involvement in schools. So that successes belong, very largely, to the students and the schools.

I certainly agree that we have students - all across the borough - who are worth celebrating. I defy anyone to watch this clip of one of Greig's sailing crews crossing the line and winning a race - their first competitive race - and not smile.

Of course!  But let's allow the stage to be taken by the students - and their teachers. And please let's tell the politicians that they should stop trying to get in on the act.

And then let's also give some sensitive thought to the children and young people who don't hit the top spots. Aren't top-of-the-heap, a winner, number 1.

Yes times ten - let's start giving credit to the teachers - one of the things I look for in a secondary is a head who doesn't take sole credit for all improvements, and talks with enthusiasm about their team. 

And I agree with Helen - we're in the fortunate position of choosing from three, if not four schools that would all be really good, with decent added value scores and proper music, drama art along with the core subjects.

Department of Education has released the provisional data for 2015. Subject to change still dependant on outcomes of marking challenges etc.

Remember this is 'headline' data only and doesn't have the value add and other stuff.  And again just because a school has 'dropped' don't rule it out.  Go and talk to the school, teachers, pupils etc and get their story.
