Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I was trying to find a link to Friends of Harringay Passage but wasn't successful.  I am hoping someone can help me.  I have two major concerns and was wondering whether these have been raised with the powers that be or whether someone can point me to who that may be.

1. The passage between Turnpike Lane and Sydney Road is always filthy.  It is full of pigeon droppings from pigeons roosting on the side of the buildings on both sides of the passage; there are always many beer cans, glass drinks bottles etc.; it smells stinks of human urine; and the restaurant seems to be washing waste under the gate out in to the passage which leaves a slimey wet trail...

2. A brick garden wall between Lausanne Road and Hampden Road (it is a house in Hampden Road) looks like it could fall over any time.  It is very tall and could do serious damage.

Thanks!

this links to the 'Group' section on Hol for FofHP. The group has monthly meetings at North Harringay School, all are welcome, perhaps someone could put the time of the next meeting on here.

It sounds as if the wall may need more urgent attention in which case I would report it to the council directly "If the structure is imminently dangerous and requires an immediate inspection, then please call us on 020 8489 1000, Monday - Friday 8:45am - 5:00pm. Outside of these times, please call 020 8348 3148."
(this is from the council web page https://eforms.secure.haringey.gov.uk/ufs/ufsmain?esessionid=938BFE... )

Hi Maggie, this is really helpful thank you.  I filled out a form on the Haringey website.

The next meeting is Weds 18th (next week). I have 6pm in my diary, but I am sure it is 7pm!!!

Your point about the state of the passage is interesting because we are about to launch  consultation with folks on the Ladder and others using the passage as to what the Friend's of the Harringay Passage focus should be.

What you are identifying is also in line with what I have personally seen there and at other parts of the Passage. I have had a discussion with John Ford in the council about the possibility of a deep clean and another initiative to help spruce things up a bit, but I believe it the suggestion made is somewhat stuck in the wheels of (local) Government. Hopefully I will get some feedback and we can have a go at trying to make some short term and small initial improvements prior to the results of the consultation I mentioned.

I have noticed a deterioration in that particular part of the passage and was thinking of reporting the restaurant slime-waste to the council.

What has also worsened of late is the amount of dog poo ALL ALONG THE PASSAGE but also on Sydney Rd itself. Unfortunately I don't think I can make the meeting on the 18th but I agree it is particularly foul at the moment and didn't used to be this bad.

I know it must be awful for the people who have side entrances there.  The Passage gets cleaned so why do the street cleaners not report pigeon problems and restaurant waste.  Weird.  Guess they can't be bothered. I did a dangerous structure submission but probably not the right place.  Not sure if they would forward.  Surprisingly I found out the other day that it is Planning who deal will people burning waste in their garden.... Mind you apparently before they got there someone had called the fire brigade.

As a follow up I don't know what is happening regarding the possibly dangerous wall I reported but the dirty passage between Turnpike Lane and Sydney Rd was forwarded to Veolia.  I hope they clean it up but whether that will stop it from happening in the future is uncertain.

What those walls need is a bit of this:

Go along to the FoHP and see if you can get them on board for a bit of anti-piss painting!

Brilliant!

That is absolutely the worst part of the passage, I use it frequently and while other parts of the passage have improved (thanks FOHP) that part continues to deteriorate, with ever increasing pidgeon droppings and layers of fatty grime - in the past I'm sure I have seen employees from Shania Supermarket pouring (animal) waste down the drain, and the slimy trail from the door behind Grill 51 is a new hazard!

There is also a dense mass of ivy next to the dog poop bin that is clearly used as a urinal - I have thought I might take some shears to it myself - does anyone know if that's legal, or should the council be asked to deal with it?

No idea but I would wear protective clothing going near that.  I have taken to holding my breath going past.
