Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Could underground cycling ever come to our bit of Green Lanes?

With so much debate on HoL about too much traffic and getting a balance between the needs of residents, businesses, commuters, shoppers, drivers, walkers,,bus users and cyclists (along with environmental stuff around pollution and air quality), I thought people might be interested in seeing this article. It's about a proposal to create underground cycling paths on disused tube lines in central London. This is really radical thinking and I wonder if there's potential to do this between Manor House and Turn Pike Lane? If it ever happens, I'm sure it wiould take years, but the debate/interest has got to begin somewhere...!

Like the Parkland Walk took over the redundant railway line to Highgate/Ally Pally? Don't hold your breath - and don't think the views will be as good

The line between Manor House and Turnpike Lane is still very much in use, I believe...

What would help I think is getting more people out of their cars and using public transport, walking, and cycling. The cycle superhighway is coming to the High Road/Seven Sisters road I believe, that should help.

But Sarah.

My car was in for repair on Wednesday so I used buses to go on my regular trip from Hornsey to Edmonton.

A journey that normally takes 20 minutes in the car took me 90 mins by bus.

At 72, I can't afford to waste time like that

I said more people, not all people. Though if it takes longer by bus, we need more bus lanes!

Prepare to be underwhelmed - the plans in no way make this route useable by all, given that the Haringey section (at least) suggests no substantial changes to existing roads. Do take the time to respond to the consultation - but perhaps wait until Haringey Cycling Campaign have published their response (on http://www.haringeycyclists.org/) which I understand is currently being worked up jointly with Islington and Hackney cycling campaigns. Should give some useful points to raise in your response.
