Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

We want to either spruce up or completely replace our hardwood front door, but need to consult someone first who can tell us if our current one is salvageable - house was rented out for a time and the door has been pretty badly treated over the years, but I'd be up for keeping it if someone with the skills can fill all the holes and repaint it beautifully.

Can anyone advise on what type of professional would do this job (carpenter? Joiner?) and please send any recommendations my way?

I have looked under all the tabs that may be relevant but don't yet know who I need to search for.

thanks!

I'd recommend contacting Woodstock Joinery. I had my hardwood front door replaced by them last year. Did a great job and pricing was very competitive. Sue runs the office, she's very helpful – try giving her a call.

Hope that helps.

We had the same dilemma (restore or replace) last year and as much as we wanted to keep the original discovered due to subsidence it was cheaper to replace than restore to get to the point we wanted with it. We went to http://www.timberwindows.com with a branch on Archway road by Highgate tube and that turned out to be the most cost effective option for the quality of door we were looking for. I guess it depends on the current state of your door and your end goal.

Thanks Tris, it's Edwardian. i think the door may possibly be original, as a couple of neighbours have the same one and it does fit nicely with the rest of the exterior. I've had a look at others that have been restored on the street and am hoping to find someone who can do a good job - got someone coming round this evening so fingers crossed it's salvageable!

It depends on the door and the house. If it's an original door in a period house it's always best to restore, in terms of aesthetics and maximising the value of the property.

This is now our plan! :)

We recently did exactly this - after years of prevarication, we had our front door (original, on a late Victorian/early Edwardian house) fully restored and repainted. It wasn't especially cheap, but he results are fantastic. We thought it might be too knackered to restore, but not at all. It was overseen by our brilliant builder Phillippa Jones (07961 164537). Incidentally, Phillippa (aka Pip) is a really good local builder/surveyor - she's now doing loads of other jobs for us and has a great team.
