Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Has been closed. You've got to go to wembly now if you want a M & S discount store. Looks like they're just letting the top floor rot, it's baracaded off like a zombie movie.

Yeah, I tried getting a plain black suit-skirt there last year. M&S seemed the obvious choice but no. Wood Green one is full of the kind of rubbish all the market stalls sell cheaper.

I'm sure Wood Green is very busy. But my ghost highstreet comment was more about the quality of the shops and are people able to get what they want or add money to the economy? Are they actually buying what they want or just what is there? Seems like it's mainly sweatshop-clothes shops and plastic tat from China. Wouldn't it be nice to have some proper shops selling good quality items with the staff on more than minimum wage? I think M&S really ought to maintain their integrity in this respect, because if they can't do it, who can?

I wouldn't say Autograph men's shirts at £40 is market-stall rubbish.

I didn't like Pearsons btw. Snooty staff resentful of the fact that they weren't working in Bond St. Too many racks crammed into too small a space - as in Primark today. Chaotic kitchen section.

Also sounds like Pearsons' predecessor D H Evans/House of Fraser to me, on the snootiness front.

I don't know about men's shirts but the women's clothes in there are horrendous! There and the Holloway one. I liked Pearsons on the basis that you could buy nice stuff in there. Like a work suit from Principles, or a nice pair of shoes or bedding. Never found the staff to be a problem. I'm not talking about luxury items here just the basics. Maybe it's just me, I'm a buy less spend more on things I really want/need kind of person, and Wood Green caters for the pile it high sell it cheap/wear it less, replace it often kind of shopping ethos, so I do tend to go elsewhere, which is a shame. It's not just M&S though, all the chain stores there seem to be down-graded versions of what you see on other highstreets (Wallis, for example). I just think it would be nice to have a good mix for everyone because there are plenty bargain basement places. Having said that I did used to love Benny Dee's when I was a student, where you could get a whole outfit for a tenner including shoes!

Not being a snob here, just think it could be nicer, the last thing we need is for it to be like Upper Street, but I don't think there's any danger of that happening any time soon :)
Absolutely agree with Lauren :-) WG M and S. Especially the sale shop is a s**t oyle suffering from an identity crisis. Like Matalan, DP and Wallis it's the land that time forgot.
Good for you going elsewhere. That's the spirit. Spend your money outside of your community. Brilliant.
Yeah, it would be great to be able to buy the things I want in wood green.
It does seem like a huge waste to just leave it unoccupied and I agree that if they made it as good as some of their other stores it would draw more people in. I wasn't particularly fond of the outlet element when they bought it in and I found the store less useful than it had previously been as they had a lot less new product lines. But I did like the cafe, it always seemed busy, can't imagine that was losing them too much money. BHS got rid of their upper floor (cafe and hairdressers) a few years ago and now they just use it as storage so maybe M&S will do the same?

I don't understand what was so bad about it: it always seemed quite busy. I would rather shop there than in Tk Max, Primark or Matalan with their carelessly-discarded clothes trailing on the floor. The only problem was, being an outlet store, it was difficult to find the average-sized garments that fit me

I am in total agreement here. Their bath towels were of a far higher quality than that of Pearsons, which simply reeked of old crazy cat lady stuff. It's so yesterday, and that's why it closed down. The concessions were rubbish, and generally just a very outdated store.
There's nothing wrong with WG high street and the shops it offers. It would otherwise not be as busy and popular as it. Bring back m&s outlet!
Just got a message from moderators saying I made an uncivil comment! I don't know what that was, we were talking about a shop weren't we? Please can you let me know what my uncivil comment was? I don't think it's right that you tell people they are being uncivil without saying what it was, because there really wasn't anything I said that was uncivil!

Don't you think that Jelly Jam's post telling me to get out of the borough I've lived in for 18 years because I said I didn't like Marks and Spencers in Wood Green and that the whole highstreet needs an overhaul was uncivil?

I absolutely haven't said anything uncivil here so maybe you got me mixed up with someone else, I would like to know please!!!

Can you also take down the comment you made calling me uncivil because I think that's rather uncivil.
