Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

A number of HOL contributors have suggested that there is a need for a Harringay Ladder Residents Association (RA) - in particular so that those residents can be represented on, or have access to, various Haringey Council Groups, such as the Finsbury Park Stakeholders Group; and can also present a united front to the Council on matters such as parking, rubbish collection, developments, etc as well as promoting appropriate cultural events.

Membership would presumably be open to residents aged over 16 within the following boundaries:

Green Lanes West, from Endymion Rd to Turnpike Lane

Turnpike Lane South, from Green Lanes to Wightman Rd

Both sides of Wightman Rd and Alroy Rd

       Endymion Rd

As a first step, it will be necessary to assemble a group of interested people to form an interim committee to discuss what form the RA should take and to agree a constitution, after which the RA can be formally established ( to be effective, an RA has to conform to various legal  requirements ) . It would be necessary at an early stage to consider whether the proposed Ladder RA would conflict with any other RAs in the catchment area.

I would like to hear from anyone who is prepared to take part in this initial work ( and it will involve work ) by email to macbeast76@hotmail.com,. Please give full name and your preferred email address and outline any special areas of expertise that could be useful to the RA.

If you have read this far, thank you for your interest

Yes Hugh, some folks need the safety of anonymity, but sadly others use it as cover to be absolute co*cks at times. So much so that I think it actually acts to stifle true democratic discussion….

I am happy for folks to have contrary views, but at the point they become obnoxious then I think any anonymity should be stripped and they should stand up and have the guts to stand behind their comments without a smoke screen.

I agree. As Kevin pointed out, there's a case to be made either way.

As an inveterate collector of asterisks, I'd like to know what the above * stands for, Justin.

On the vexed question of anonymity and "anonymity", I think we should take account of their close kissing cousins, to wit pseudonyms, noms de plume / de clavier / de guerre. Then you come across the occasional quasi-anonymous old git who's a bit precious about distinctions between his person and his persona. I'm sure HOL, LCSP, WRN4RA and the world in general are better off without such vermin.

He obviously means " cooks "

Ahr, you see Eddie (may I call you Eddie, or is it truly OAE?) you have spotted my fatal error. I shall be more circumspect in my use of vowels in words with * in in future.

The point Kevin made, and Hugh reproduced, I think dramatically understates the impact of the the way folks hide behind pseudonyms. Kevin makes a strong case for their use in a promoting folks to engage in what they may feel to be a safe manner. I know a teacher who needs to do so in order to stay anonymous from his pupils…. However, Kevin somewhat skirts around the negative impacts- I have avoided a discussion on more than one occasion where an anonymous individual has been in full flow, knowing they can say as they wish with no come back.

For the record, my real name is a Lord Lucan

You've lost the moustache M'Lord...

- John,

Ha, ha.

I wasn't asking for names, I wanted an explanation of the "subtle" treatment, that's all. Yes, I thought about using the word 'handles', but felt that it wasn't quite what I wished to express, so I used the word 'anonymous', simple as that.

By the by, out of interest, do your 'unhappy ex LCSPers still receive and read the minutes etc that they are sent?

I'd be the first to agree that there are occasions when people are just rude on HoL. When I see it or am alerted to it, I do take action, but for the sake of a healthy forum, both Liz and I try to moderate with a light touch and sometimes it's a close call.

I'm sure you'll agree that whilst HoL does seem to encourage some people to be more frank than they would be in real life, HoL and forums like it don't mould human psychology; they reflect it. I know from personal experience that things can get pretty heated and frank in local groups. Then of course, there's the less frank whispering campaigns. So most of what you see here happens offline in one way or another. (But let me be clear, I no more condone rudeness on HoL that I do local whispering campaigns.)

You're right about the numbers. About 10% of visitors are bounces, about 60% are from all parts of Harringay and immediately neighbouring areas, 20% are from elsewhere in the borough and nearby and the rest citywide, national and worldwide. (Harringay has a population of about 18,500). When it comes to visit numbers, more like 80% are Harringay.

As I've explained to various people, any group who wants a more exclusive membership can set up a group within HoL and approve all members. So, it would be very easy to set up a Ladder only area, as I've explained previously.

Hope that helps.

-Hugh,

I shall take your offer forward to the next meeting, however LCSP along with GRA, the other Ladder RAs etc., is already a closed group in your terminology but open to new members so what would the gain be?

What is a whispering group?

BTW, I hope you manage to get some great shots on tonight's "Super" Moon which I believe will be rising shortly after 6pm. Looking forward to seeing your efforts tomorrow.

I'll let Wikipedia do the talking.

"Super Moon" - ooh missed that. There was another some weeks back and we had a totally obscured sky. Tonight looks more promising.

- Hugh,

Having read your Wiki link, I'm not aware of such things taking place, just rumours and innuendo.

Are you suggesting that you know of whispering campaigns locally that you think should be exposed?
