Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

HARRINGAY residents and transient motorists might like to view this sub-five-minute video shot this afternoon.

It's a time-lapse over 60 minutes (link below).

It features the foot of Hewitt Road from where motorists exit, but are not permitted to turn right.

Further along the street, a different camera – a Council-controlled camera – keeps an eagle eye out for unsuspecting motorists. It records the action more regularly and more determinedly than the footage you're about to see.

Watching the video:

  • Keep your eyes on the lower right of the frame: each time a vehicle turns right into Green Lanes, the figure of £180* is displayed. [*in the first of the three videos below, that should have been rendered as £130 and mentioned £65 if advantage were taken of the quick-payment deal]
  • If you watch through to the end, a summary of the hour's activities and that hour's takings is displayed.
  • Finally, there's a Star-Wars-like listing of the locations in Haringey where such cameras are located. Enjoy.

Enjoy ?!

Thanks for the HD video and editing go to Paul Stork

I don't agree that the issue is the level of the fine. It's very dangerous to turn right for pedestrians and cyclists therefore the fine is absolutely proportionate as breaching it risks lives. The issue is that many people who regularly have used the road for a number of years are instinctively turning right. I think that there would be benefit from an extra sign on the left side. I have taken pictures, spoken to the businesses in the immediate vicinity about the extent of the problem and submitted a members enquiry earlier today. I have also asked how many fixed penalty notices the camera issued yesterday.
Please no more signs! If drivers can't read road markings what difference will a sign make?
I must say when I stood in the middle of the road and took the pictures it was quite clear. However I do think it's likely to be drivers who have used the road for a number of years that are instinctively turning right.

- Clive, I've looked at the list of CCTV fixed camera locations (above) & I'm slightly confused. In the LBH preamble it  states that the cameras are operational: Sunday to Thursday 7am - 11pm & 7am - 4am Friday to Sunday. However looking at their locations, most of them only appear to be operational between the hours of 7am - 10am Monday to Friday, (morning rush hour), including the ones on Green Lanes N8 & N4.

I'm sure there is a simple explanation, but do you know what their remit is outside 'operational hours'?

Morning Peter:

Great question, no answer yet!

Since it is unlawful to turn right 24/7, IMO, no motorist should rely on these Operational Hours. I'm not sure why the Council might want to publish such hours anyway.

Last night while passing the cameras on foot, I saw both trained on the Hewitt Road junction: the existing, pole-mounted camera that I had assumed was for bus-lanes and the new smaller one that was retro-fitted to a pole yesterday.

Would 7 - 10 am be the hours when the bus lanes are in operation ?

I would have thought the jolly big letters and the enormous arrow pointing left were clear indications of what you need to do at the junction. And before anyone says you can't see it when other vehicles are on it, I saw little evidence if that on the video. If vehicles choose to flout that ban and put other road users and pedestrians at risk, then on their own credit cards be it.
I've also seen vehicles turning right into Warham from Green Lanes going south, which is clearly prohibited, and leads to a hop, skip and jump competition for people crossing Warham at the junction. I hope those drivers are getting similar degrees of financial slapping.
One problem is that this fine isn't proportionate to income, it's half a weeks income to some, an hours income for others.

Labour shouldn't support flat taxation like this if it can help it.
If you want to having a fining regime that is proportionate to earnings I would imagine that the expenditure on administration would exceed the income from fines. Can you imagine the palaver!
Ok fine them proportionate to the worth of their car. That would be easy to do and would have the same effect.

Got a gold plated Merc ? ker-ching !
Now you're talking!

Turn right get fined turn left don't get fined, its not too complicated
