Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

A peaceful march has been organised for Saturday 2nd August at 2pm, starting out from Ducketts Common opposite Turnpike Lane Tube station and ending with a rally opposite the Haringey Civic Centre in Wood Green High Road.

Keith Flett, secretary of the Haringey TUC trade union said: “This is about human rights, it is about justice, it is about stopping the killing of civilians, including children.

“There is a significant anger in the borough about what is happening in Gaza and we want to see that turned into something practical- collecting for and sending medical aid.”

Michael is right. Israelis are dying just as Palestinians are dying. The focus should be on bringing peace and stability but most people just seem intent on laying all blame on one side whether or not that results in anything positive for either side.
Perhaps another way of looking at it is if there was a famine in a country caused by a conflict, would your priority be to get food into bellies or endlessly debate who is right and who is wrong? I have my own views on the causes of the conflict between Gaza and Israel and the solution I would want to see but at this precise moment there are far more important things to do that argue about them

Yes, the focus has to be on ending the terrible situation that exists before moving on to how to achieve on a lasting solution to the cumulative grievances and injustices that have created it. The purpose of the marches and demonstrations is to mobilise international public opinion towards this end. While HoL is certainly a place to share information about such local events on Palestine, as on other issues, it may not be where we should be arguing about the rights and wrongs.

Haringey Justice for Palestinians Facebook has a 1.30 start for today's march.

Yeah, they're a pretty bigoted bunch those Neturei Karta guys. As a woman and a feminist and someone who believes in LGBT rights, I wouldn't align myself with them and would question anyone who would. They also hold pretty disgusting views when it comes to the Holocaust.
There will be no peace until there is justice. There will be periods of time to allow rearming but be in no doubt, the resistance is hugely supported is Gaza in the same way that Churchill was supported by many of the British people during the Second World War.

If you're not calling for change to the outrageous behavior of Israel, you're failing to pave way for a solution that can bring peace.
Likewise, just substitute 'Israel' for 'Hamas'. Only difference is, I haven't attended any demos supporting Israel, nor would I attend a demo which lays sole blame at Israel's feet. Also, Israelis are free to be critical of Israeli policy without being imprisoned/murdered/exiled unlike those critical of Hamas in Gaza.
Hannah, I am no fan of Hamas nor of the policies of the government of Israel. The people who matter to me are the civilians who are suffering the horror of what is happening at this very minute.
Exactly how I feel.
The devil is in the details, what settlement do you think would be be fair and that both sides should accept ? Would you accept that Palestine should be allowed to exist as a normal country like Israel, possibly including Gaza and West Bank into this settlement ?

Put your cards on the table, Hannah.

To want peace you must accept compromise, right ?

Of course I believe that. I believe in a two state solution which according to polls, is what the majority of Israelis believe in. I have always, without any hesitation, believed that there should be two states. A just and fair solution will only come when both sides decide that they cannot live like this any more. It will not come from solely isolating Israel and acting as if the behaviour of Hamas is acceptable. It will take a lot of compromise on the Israelis' parts, but the Palestinians will also have to make compromises. If you truly want to see what I believe in: http://peacenow.org.il/eng

Well you're not going to get any 'peace now' because Israel are not prepared to even make one square inch of Palastine a sovereign state. So forget peace now. It's going to be war now and for a very very long time.

The only solution is that some of Israels allies, stop being allied. That includes people on Internet forums as well as nations states.

The Palestinians make their compromise every frigging day. They live the compromise, they die the compromise.

When there is some semblance of Justice, then we discuss about peace. Not the other way around.

What we are seeing in Palestine is a whole nation living under a fascist authoritarian rule. In those situations, as we all know, is not the time for peace. We wouldn't accept it ourselves and we can't accept it for people that have lived it for so, so long already.
