Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I’m facing eviction but Haringey CE (who earns more than PM) wouldn’t acknowledge my letter

I wrote to Chief Exec. Nick Walkley by email on 30th June 2014.    

Anita Hunt emailed me saying “Mr Walkley has referred your email to me because I am the council’s complaints manager..."

A week later I, personally, delivered a paper copy to his office.

Though it was also addressed personally to him I still did not receive a personal reply.

This is a breach of protocol & elementary good manners.

 

My council tax  & housing benefit has been withdrawn since I informed the Council of a change in circumstances. My son & his wife have moved back in.

There is no change of circumstances for me except I have less space and still no money to pay what is now being demanded.

I have asked them cite the legislation which would, presumably, force me to pursue my son for the arrears (or even attempt to evict him should he refuse, but I don’t know if I could do that legally anyway).  

So far they have refused to furnish me with this information.

Have you tried the Citizens' Advice Bureau ?

No. I have tried the Tottenham Law Centre who are limited in their services. E.g. they have managed to lose an absolutely vital letter from the Council to me, which the Council told me to hand over to a lawyer. I did not make a copy. We phoned from Law Centre to the Council for a replacement copy, which they said they would send, but it has not arrived yet.

Am guessing he's quite a busy man, so his complaints manager is probably the best person to help you resolve this quickly.

My point is that the man should be polite.

To be fair to Nick Walkley, there are many criticisms of the man (dodgy accent, inability to smile, strange resemblace to one of the Kray twins etc). But he don't half impress me how he responds back or gets a response back to every email. The man must not sleep! 

You got a complaints manager responding, not a complaints officer, my point is I think, Ms Hunt is actually fairly senior and a lot more than you would've got if you just emailed the general complaints account or called. It strikes me, the CEO read your email and is concerned enough to get a manager to look into it.  You got a response within a week too. 

I'm not saying you should be 'grateful' - just think, you're being harsh. Many CEOs wouldnt have even opened your email until 2017. 

William, when housing benefit is calculated it takes into account the combined income of all the people living in the property. If you think they have got this wrong, John D's advice to talk to the Citizen's Advice Bureau to a good one.

 

No doubt you are correct but if I am to press my son for money I need to know the legal basis, which information the Council have so far not disclosed. They have told me it's all in the 1992 Local; Government Finance Act but that is an enormous document & I have no idea where in the text is the info I want. I am not prepared to dun my son if I have no clarity on the legal basis. When he first moved back in he offered money for rent, which I refused as Haringey Council had been advising tenants we were NOT to sub let, that it was unlawful so to do.

In addition I have asked Council to clarify on what basis they collect Council Tax, as a colleague of mine also a trade unionist, & an OAP on Pension Credit & a one time Councillor, told me he never pays Council Tax. Is this a national policy for OAPs on Pension Credit or merely the aberrant decision of one council? 

By never pays I mean he is never asked for it, not that he pays it & reclaims the money via Council Tax benefit.

I've a friend that wanted to do everything his way, he wouldn't listen to sound practical advice from well meaning friends/family with regard navigating the benefits system. He was evicted. The end.

No.  There is no requirement to inform the Council if you have guests.
