Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I'm sure everyone agrees that water bills are too high. I urge you to check yours, please

I've discovered so many people, like me, have overpaid for years and never queried it.

I live in a one-bedroom flat in a small block and was paying nearly £500 until very recently when I found that my neighbours here were paying less than half that sum

Thames have now halved my bill but will not accept responsibility or apologise for all the years they overcharged me

I suggest you do some checking on your water account     Sally Mustoe

Yikes! I pay £300 a year for a 3 bed half house and I thought I was being ripped off! Water rates are far too high, while some of these companies are tax avoiders.

Digging into the Thames Water page for 'discount' shows this. You need first to ask to have a water meter fitted, which should bring down your charge unless you bathe twice a day etc. (Check, I don't know the rates for metered water.) If they can't fit a meter, you can have an Assessed Household Charge - for a single person it's £232, for a one bedroom dwelling, it's £286 pa.

*exits to look up water bills*...

PS I was once told by a friend who worked for a water board that the claim that they need to meter every house to monitor consumption and leaks is bluff. They just need a meter at, say, the end of every road.  Metering to stop people wasting water does make sense, but meanwhile they could get the figures they really need, much easier.

yes, I tried that and was told that a meter was not possible here, then got the reduction

as a life member of CPRE, active supporter of FoE, Tree Trust etc and an occasional donor to Water Aid, I object to being cheated by Thames   SM

Lots of useful information and tips on using water wisely.
We had a meter installed a few years ago. We're careful with water and our bill dropped quite a lot.

As per original poster, keep chasing / checking them.  We had a meter installed in 2009 after which 3 or 4 different companies (outsourced work) were sent out by Thames over the course of 4 years to find a leak, which they could never find even after they fitted a new external water pipe.  Turned out to be a faulty meter.  At this point alarm bells rang so we started chasing them for a corrected bill and 12 months of hassling resulted in a £2300 refund!  Even then they tried to get out of it by non communication.  Regarding the pipe, back in 2009 they said the meter was running high indicating a leak - which could be from the outside pipe.  of course we could pay them to fix £750 or get our own person ££2-£3K by their estimates.  We refused as the reasoning was so vague - rightly as it turned out.  FYI Thames changed the pipe themselves in 2013 and the workmen told me that they'd changed the process as it was more economical for Thames to carry out the repair rather then wait for the owner to mend any leaks. Apparently lots of leaks in the Thames area due to the Victorian systems crumbling.

Interesting debate! I've recently moved to the area, and contacted Thames Water to set up my account. I have a meter installed in the property, so I'd have expect them to ask for the reading and charge me based on my usage, however they charged me for a fixed annual fee of £450. They said they are not reading the meters in this area and it only goes by a fixed annual fee. I now from my experience that my water usage should be about half of this, by they literally told me this is what it is deal with it!

Wouldn't put you with that if I were you Omid. You have a water meter and they are charging you for assumed annual usage. If they won't get their act into gear you could try contacting the Consumer Council for Water.

good luck with CCW, Omid    the arrogance of Services minions never ceases to amaze me   their mantra seems to be: 'we make the rules and there's nothing you little people can do about it'    SM
