Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

The challenges and benefits of creating a Neighbourhood Forum - a discussion 9th July

The Localism Act of 2011 gave neighbourhoods the power to set up Neighbourhood Forums, which are community groups designated to take forward neighbourhood planning. In 2012 Highgate took advantage of the new legislation to set up a neighbourhood forum for their area.

The current Chair of Highgate Neighbourhood Forum Rachel Allison and the previous chair Maggy Meade-King have kindly agreed to share their experiences of creating and running the Highgate Neighbourhood Forum with Harringay residents.

Maggy will give a presentation on the Forum and both Maggy and Rachel will be able to answer any questions about the structure, purpose, challenges, benefits and so on of such a community group.

The purpose of the meeting is to start a conversation about how Harringay residents can be involved in shaping the future of the area and what can be learned from the experiences of others. A neighbourhood forum is one of the options, although not the only one or even the right one for our area.

Put this date in your diary, Wed 9th July at 7pm
The venue is Cyprus Kitchen on Green Lanes

Any and all are welcome.

Sounds interesting, i'll come along, thanks for arranging it Liz.

I haven't organised it. I'm just the messenger

Great. Will this be an evening meeting?

UPDATE: Venue is now confirmed for Cyprus Kitchen at 628 Green Lanes beginning at 7pm (and finishing well before the football)

I've just ben sent a link about this issue by a contact who works at boilerhouse. They've launched a new crowd-updateable website showing existing neighbourhood forums in the UK.

Totally forgot about this. Thanks for reminding, going to try to come now...

I had hoped to attend this forum, but a conference call for work ran late. If anyone did attend and can share thoughts / notes from the meeting, I'd love to read them.

I don't have notes or anything like that sorry, but it was really interesting to hear about, and Maggy and Rachel were great at explaining neighbourhood forums.

It sounds like it would be a lot of work and effort to make one here for us, but worthwhile. After listening to them i want one. Interested to hear what others thought?

Agreed, very grateful to the Highgate group for coming down and I'm sure it's something that would be beneficial for our area. As I mentioned I am on the neighbourhood planning policy team at DCLG so if I can be of any help with answering technical questions/ general stuff on the policy I'm very happy to.

DCLG is the Dept. for Communities and Local Government, the government Department responsible for neighbourhood planning. I have quite a good overview of neighbourhood planning nationwide so any info on examples around the country, numbers of areas doing it etc. I'm happy to provide.

No it's central government, so my work is focussed on the policy itself rather than directly working with groups undertaking neighbourhood planning.
