Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Till Monday* to Comment on the Biggest Changes Ever Planned for Harringay

*UPDATE: DEADLINE EXTENDED TO MONDAY - SEE END OF CLIVE CARTER COMMENT BELOW

A few weeks ago, I outlined what the site allocations plan will mean for our neighbourhood.

There are now just two days left to comment. I urge you to drop an email to the council (all contact info given at the bottom of this post. Just say what you feel. Don't worry about being articulate - at the very least just jot a few notes or sentences. I've done my best to summarise what the plan means locally on the post I linked to above. Whether your comment is in support or voicing concerns, let's at least be heard.

Just to show you how ineloquent you need to be, here's what I've just written in an email:

There appears to be a huge amount of development planned for the neighbourhood of Harringay (Sites S1-5 + various housing trajectory sites).  I share the concern of many locals that this will increase the local population by a significant percentage. If this is to be successfully achieved, it is essential that the proper local services are provided, including planning for public transport, traffic, education and health.

I would also hope that the developments can be planned in such a way as to benefit the existing local community. Simply adding high density housing will add little to the neighbourhood and may just be a negative influence for the existing community. A mixed development offering more than just high density housing might offer great opportunities. I would urge the Council not to simply fill the obvious 'empty' spaces with housing, but to work with the local community to plan a truly life and neighbourhood enhancing set of developments.

Finally, I am a great supporter of the warehouse community currently based on Site S2 and 3. I strongly urge the Council to ensure that the plan should look beyond immediate imperatives, consider the longer term benefits to the borough and find a way to accommodate this artistic community and their 'affordable' live-work spaces.

If you don't have time to write anything and you agree with anything I've written, just copy/adapt the bits you can use and paste it into an email to ldf@haringey.gov.uk.

Wow, I can just imagine how late you handed in your papers at university. You made the deadline by eight minutes!

Hugh,

Thank you for the reminder and your work on this. I agree it's important.

However, the matter is titled by the Council in such a way that the average resident's eyes are likely to glaze over.

"Site Allocations" is IMO typical of the jargon used by Planning that (possibly deliberately) obfuscates.

In a few years time, some people will wonder what is going on around them and the Council may say, well, you had an opportunity to comment on site allocations years ago!

BTW, one of my local Stroud Green Councillors secured an extension to the deadline till this Monday, so if anyone hasn't yet responded, like me, there is still this weekend to give it some consideration.

Thanks Clive.

Good point about the divergence of political and democratic interests.

Glad I saw this as after reading the above comments I thought I was too late (Perhaps you should reply to the first listed comment informing them of the extension to deadline so no- one else makes that mistake.)  Also, what time on Monday?

Have you sent a reminder to other locales?  Finsbury Park fans reside far and wide - well in neighbouring boroughs at least!  I'm sure you probably have.  Forgive me - I'm hearing about this for the first time.

Useful, Clive. Thanks. What time?
Deadline extended to Monday - see Clive Carter comment above.

Thanks. I have filled in the questionnaire specifically for St Ann's Hospital site.

How could health services be improved there?

Interesting to note that the large majority of the site could be up for development and given it is currently public (NHS) property could make this an ideal site for community/ cooperative led development. Given the concerns stated on this forum about over-development led by private volume housebuilders, a development of custom-built properties led by a housing coops might present a better option. This could place better controls on size of units, tenure types, sustainability, and access to new homes for first time buyers and those who feel priced out.

Could this be an option in this area? http://www.lilac.coop/

This development is by no means perfect but does provide some pointers. Is there much interest in custom-build, self build and coop housing in the area? I only know of the development in Muswell Hill:

Not sure of the overall plans for other sites and how far any proposals have progressed. Any links to development briefs would be useful?

I agree with Hugh about mixed uses and retaining existing ones. A set of design codes and development briefs could be developed, which involves extensive public consultation in order to get just that.

Keep up the good work Hugh!

I was interested to learn from the Council yesterday that they received about 200 email responses to the consultation on this issue, most of which were from HArringAy.

Great work Hugh- way to rally 'the team'

Only just found out about this so annoyed that I cannot contribute to consultation, hopefully there is still time, this is a prime area for development and could be developed in a way that would contribute to the community and users of the area for lives worth living, there is and will be more population in the area and it is important to make the best of it, I understand that some of the land within the hospital is contaminated, this would need to be addressed, also the most important issue is not to allow the self-servertives to sell off common assets to private investers, the police station for example could be a community hub of sorts and is situated ideally for a police station.

There will be another chance.
