Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Grand Parade festival planned.
Following a couple of discussions on here about Green lanes, I emailed a few people from the Green Lanes Strategy Group about some of the issues raised, including the possibility of a festival. Nilgun Canver, the chair, emailed me back with the following,
"...we have plans to organise a Grand Parade festival. I have already had initial discussions about the possibility of closing a section of the Grand Parade to traffic with relevant officers and Cllr. Haley. The main concern they have is around the busses. This item will be on the agenda for the next GLSG meeting on 23 Sept. As you’re interested we’ll keep you informed of the progress. If we decide to go ahead with the festival I’m sure amongst others we’ll need your help too."
Hooray, time to iron the kaftan. We'll be salsaing down Grand Parade yet!

Good to hear. Buses: Green Lanes/St Anns/Seven Sisters Rd/Green Lanes. Although the turning from St Anns into Seven Sisters & vice versa could be tricky for those damned bendy buses.

I wonder why their main concern is the buses? They normally divert them easily enough when there's an 'incident' or kebab on fire, why is it a problem to divert them for a positive event for once?

Emergency services are able to do anything. Maybe we could drag a kebab out of a shop, shoot it, then set fire to it. Nice way to start a festival ... and get the road closed.

It is good to hear. Lets not get too sidetracked by the buses issue. I reckon it can be done.
It's what we asked for and they are trying to achieve it. Hurrah for people power!

Liz.. I hope they'll not only be dancing in the street (bus lane), but that the serious issue (for me at least) of HOW to preserve GPde for coming generations... and how a start can be made at stopping the general decline of the buildings be made public... Or is it all 'just for fun'?
I hope at least, the non-HOLers might be made aware of the 'gem' that they pass by each day, probably mostly without noticing...

I think it should be a consciousness raising event whereby people begin to see GP as a high street and the centre of our community, rather than a demarcation line or a throughway to somewhere else. There are issues around preservation and improvement to the area which will also be talked about by the GLSG although I have no details yet.
The more we talk about it, photograph it, share our finds on it, dance on it, socialise on it, the more GP becomes a focus for Harringay and a source of pride.
I would love to see a Harringay community venue on GP so that all RAs meet there (and sometimes get together perhaps?), different cultures, generations and classes get together there and that acts as a repository for all that knowledge we have reclaimed from the past from the area, bit like HOL but REAL and open to all.
We all need a little blue sky thinking on a rainy day, don't we?

Steve, my aim is to ensure that issues such as the preservation of buildings are part of the local charter which is very much alive at the moment and will also be a key part of the GLSG on 23rd.
I hope that Nilgun's aim is to make the event truly inclusive such that it's design includes significant input from locals, rather than allowing the so-called community representatives at the GLSG to decide the whole thing.
